"If one of us is remote, we all work as if remote" is questionable. While it creates empathy/sympathy and urge to fix remoting problems, if one of us broke her wrist we wouldn't all type with non-dominant hand for 6 weeks.
Not reducing the value of empathy, but when I'm remote I accept that it is not as good a group experience and don't want everyone to give up their advantages. My choice to work as a remote shouldn't hobble everyone else.
If one of us is unfamiliar with the coding language, should we all write amateur-level code? If I become hard of hearing should you all wear earplugs to work?
This isn't to say that we expect the exact same behaviors from people in different situations and physicalities; but that we are okay with others working to their best levels when we have difficulties -- and leverage other people's different abilities.
I don't even want a team to adopt an online story/work/kanban board when I'm remote. I will keep up by pairing/mobbing with people who CAN see the board, since we're pairing or mobbing anyway.
And also, being a remote is usually a choice. I joined virtual orgs and became a remote team member by choice, knowing what that meant. It wasn't a surprised sprung on me.
I love what people did to make me feel/behave more "local" (sherpas, better connecting software, mics, etc) but never approved local people giving up the advantages that being colocated gave them. Never will.
