We all would do well to sit with Robin DiAngelo's #WhiteFragility and absorb sentences like this: “I believe that white progressives cause the most daily damage to people of color.” Great piece @xwaldie for @NewYorker. newyorker.com/books/page-tur…
This: “The most effective adaptation of racism over time is the idea that racism is conscious bias held by mean people.” I've been thinking a lot about this false binary thinking in the context of #MeToo: the notion that there are "good" and "bad" men. We're complex.
Pair this with @MaggieHagerman 's outstanding new research on the stories affluent white parents tell themselves about how they're raising their kids... and why. Definitely the thing I struggle with the most here in #Seattle. time.com/5362786/talkin…
I also think about @nhannahjones's consistently brilliant (and devastating) writing on school segregation and the systems that prop it up. @RichardvReeves work on "dream hoarders." And @AnandWrites new critique of self-serving philanthropy. This is what we're up against.
The ever-innovative @anatosaurus has a really-fascinating take weaving some of these strands together (let's not forget #patriarchy and #neoliberalism as structural influences here). lareviewofbooks.org/article/your-c…
And of course no thread discussing the intersection of various systems of oppression would be complete without a shout-out to @RianeEisler's brilliant work on "domination vs partnership" as a lens through which to understand these relationships: see e.g. centerforpartnership.org/product/tomorr…
CC @SceneOnRadio given overlap with #SeeingWhite and #MEN (please tell me we'll get to Dr. Eisler's work in an upcoming episode!)
