Jumping onto this webinar now. Not too late to join the awesome @jessicaroberts to learn how to get people moving in new ways. #walking #bicycleschangelives #transit #mobility #TDM
Subsidized transit card a great predictor of increased transit use. Use loss framing to get 11x more use, says @jessicaroberts : You're missing out if you don't take advantage of the money they're putting in your pocket. #transit
"Fresh Start Effect": We set an arbitrary day/time like New Year's Day to become a new person. Reaching out to someone who has just moved w/info to help them establish new transportation habits in this new setting is one effective technique.
Behavioral science resource for shifting transportation habits from @altaplanning + @TransitCenter: transitcenter.org/wp-content/upl….
Our brains have 2 systems, fast & slow (thanks Daniel Kahneman for this insight). If you make transpo decisions using fast/automatic thinking it may not be an optimal decision. Jessica Roberts of Alta Planning in small screen above. Below, slide she's talking about: Our brains use 2 systems to make decisions. System 1 fast thinking/automatic, intuitive/effortless,. System 2 slow thinking/reflective, deliberate, analytic, effortful.
I put Jessica Roberts in the description of the slide, forgot to tag her in the tweet. So that's @jessicaroberts presenting her great talk on using behavioral science to shift transportation behaviors.
Not a lot of research so far on using behavioral science to shift transportation behaviors. @jessicaroberts worked w/@B_I_Tweets for @TransLink. Learn more at altaplanning.com/wp-content/upl… #transit #TDM
Use behavioral science concepts to identify barriers to trying a different transportation method and to identify/test solutions. Example "ambiguity aversion" (I don't like not knowing what will happen), point out that driving time is unknown vs reliability of bike travel time. Slide transportation demand mode shift work for TransLink BC. Market Segment 1
"Make it a habit" market: People who've already used transit, would definitely consider using it more often. Help them reframe their mental accounting (do you want to spend $$ on car parking or something that's more fun/desirable?). Transit market segment
Invoking social norms can help people shift transpo habits. Numbers need to be on your side, says @jessicaroberts. Here's one for you: In WA state nearly 9 out of 10 people using transit walk or bike to/from the stop. (Source: Latest National Household Travel Survey)
Implementation intention: You're a GOTV caller & someone says they plan to vote. Your response shouldn't be "Great! Goodbye!". It's ."Great; now where do you plan to vote, how are you getting there, what time, is someone going w/you?" Get them to plan, more likely to execute.
Resources @jessicaroberts suggests: @edXOnline courses on behavioral science. A/B trial design tool @ideas42 abtresting.ideas42.org. Research: @B_I_Tweets; @WhatWorksCities; @MayorInnovation (working w/Tacoma WA); @UofT_BEAR; JTL at @MITdusp mobility.mit.edu
Came out of @jessicaroberts webinar on behavioral science musing on how to apply principles to ongoing professional development, staff training, capacity-building work inside agencies. How do we nudge toward better design/construction/etc of active transpo infrastructure?
Adding to my tweetstream on behavioral science/transportation mode shift: @teeniematlock on use of grammar/metaphor in political campaigns applicable for nuance in framing americanscientist.org/article/framin…. (Hey Mom & Dad, my linguistics/English degrees do have real-world utility.)
