One Q - does @NIH give time off for maternity leave for trainees? A: 8 weeks, moving towards 12 for mat leave soon, but this is still not enough. For PIs, new policy for mothers would extend #ECR status.
Panel Discussion starts w/ @alejandroadem @MitacsCanada
@McGill_VPRI @mcgillu
Bonnie Le, a #Banting recipient @UofT
Kay Lund @NIH (who presented earlier)
#CSPC2018
#CSPC2018 @alejandroadem @MitacsCanada lists the programs avail for trainees, and although some say this is a "distraction" from thesis, internship opportunities and #scipol and #industry fellowships are useful and very relevant for future of work in #cdnsci
#CSPC2018 Martha Crago @McGill_VPRI says @CIHR_IRSC @NSERC_CRSNG @SSHRC_CRSH should do what @FRQS1 @FRQSC @FRQ_NT does - get 2 pieces of paper, from applicant student and from PI to make sure that expectations line up, that trainees are supported.
She warns against trainees becoming isolated by going abroad and not gaining a "science family" which is important for career development.

@McGill_VPRI also adds that 50-60% of research grants go to trainee support, not reagents. This isn't appreciated enough! #CSPC2018
Bonnie Le @UofT says #Banting gave her financial stability as an international student, and that grant and award application writing was great to develop the narrative of her research, esp to reflect on its impacts #CSPC2018
#CSPC2018 @McGill_VPRI notes on mat leave that Switzerland supports trainees not just w/ leave but also with benefits. Stipend awards increase with # of children
Kay Lund @NIH mentions paper showing giving trainees teaching experience for 2 months had zero negative effects on productivity, it actually increased employability! They are also looking into better ways to integrate trainees into #scipol 🙌 #CSPC2018
#CSPC2018 @alejandroadem mentions how @MitacsCanada programs enables #trainees to develop skills that complement their PhD training. On teaching, post-docs do this! If profs are meant to teach, aspiring profs should get to get experience doing this
Personal note from having attended #fwd50fow @fwd50conf @Policy_Ignite last night, I'll add to the #CSPC2018 convo on #datascience by pointing out this great initiative from @Tjido bringing that skillset in a v tangible way 2 high school students
