France presented today its #energy and #climate strategy. It has four goals:
1 - To cut #energy consumption
2 - To turn away from #fossilfuels
3 - To diversify its #energy mix
4 - To keep things affordable, increase jobs and innovate medias.businessimmo.com/default/0002/3…
The overall target of France's strategy for #energy and #climate is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through cutting GHG emissions down significantly and also increasing carbon sinks
France wants to cut #CO2 emissions down to 227 Mt in 10 years by cutting final #energy consumption 14% and primary #energy from #fossilfuels by 35%. Also, increasing #renewable heating and doubling the #electricity from renewables. Note: transport emissions vanish by 2050.
France aims to reduce #nuclear to about 50% of its power generation shuting down 14 reactors until 2035. In the process, though, it aspires to create 420,000 jobs by 2028 and grow the economy 1.8% more than in the reference scenario.
France wants to cut #energy consumption but especially from #oil by -35% in 2028 compared to 2012 and gas -19%, and to all but phase-out #coal in the next decade. See how electricity consumption, on the other hand, is expected to grow slightly.
France's #energy & #climate strategy sets also plans for transportation (in line with those announced by @Teresaribera):
- No ICE sales by 2040
- 1 million subsidies for vehicle purchases
- 4.8 million electric cars on the road by 2028
- charging infrastructure
- improved mileage
Beyond reducing #energy consumption, France wants to make it cleaner. 32% of consumption to be #renewable by 2030: 40% of #electricity, 38% final heating demand, 15% final fuel demand and 10% gas consumption.
To achieve 32% of final #energy from #renewables, France plans to boost #wind by up to 35.6 GW onshore and 5.2 GW offshore and, especially, #solar to an ambitious 44.5 GW (higher than Germany today) by 2028, in less than 10 years.
To make room for the 40% of #renewables power production, French #nuclear generation will go down to 50% closing the impressive amount of 14 reactors between today and 2035. To minimize social impact, the gov aims at plants w/ multiple reactors so they stay open.
The gradual shutdown of France's #nuclear reactors will focus on the oldest ones first and @edfenergy will clarify the list during the consultation period of the gov strategy, announcing closures 3 years in advance.
Finally, France's #energy and #climate strategy considers a bunch of measures to address energy poverty and preserve its competitiveness.

There are tons more details in the press release - have a look: medias.businessimmo.com/default/0002/3…
