"Understanding #encryption & the #aabil" for #dumbbastards like me
.#Encryption & #privacy are strongly & deeply connected.
"Privacy", as understood in AU, is an individual's #humanright to #privacy, as enshrined in legislation, created in the @Parliament's, both federal & states, to guarantee individuals their #HumanRight as detailed by the @UN & interpreted by our legislators & the courts
Corporations in AU have certain rights to privacy, mainly dictated by the #CororationsAct2001, which describes how companies should & must act in relation to each other & what will happen if they fail to do so. Also in other Acts & regulations dictating proper business practice.
But when we hear govts & institutions & businesses talk about #privacy, they are mainly talking about their responsibility to protect the individual, their constituents, their clients, their customers, their students, their employees, by protecting information collected from them
from prying eyes who will use that information to their disadvantage
The #privacy in telecommunications & messaging over the internet is established by protocols adopted by the giant corporations who design & conduct the apps allowing individuals & businesses to communicate with each other, without others being able to see those communications
.#Encryption is one of those protocols.
In simple terms, #Encryption takes a message that you create in your app & smashes it up so that it cannot be read by anyone else, regardless of what resources they apply to doing that. You need a code, specific to that smashing, to unravel it.
.#Encryption is basically large corporations' way of establishing their own #privacy.
Unlike us individuals, large corporations don't rely on government legislation to protect their information from prying eyes.
We need to rely on the goodwill of the government & the big players to protect our personal information. If they fail to act in accordance with our rights to #privacy, we get screwed. It happens all the time.
While we rely on #privacylaws & regulations & the proper treatment of govt, business & organisations to act accordingly, big business does not. It just gets its techos to design an app. That's where #encryption comes from. It is not some sort of #terrorism #genius invention.
.@Encryption is the basis of proper protected communication between big business in AU & across the world.
So #WTF is going on here? Why is @PeterDutton_MP, & the government & the opposition that he control at present, so intent on destroying the basis of proper communication between big business?
It's not easy to provide an A to this Q. Big business designed #encryption & use it all the time to conduct their affairs. To put a #superkey into an #encryptedmessage to allow to be #decrypted by anyone with that #superkey is insanity, it removes the whole notion of #encryption
We know that big business is not happy with this move by the govt. They understand the insanity of the #aabil. They did not call for it. They issued technical reasons for it being considered as a bad move through their #serviceproviders & may not comply with implementation.
The #aabil may yet see corporations being prepared to operate outside the law.
They could do that because they know that once that #superkey comes into play, all someone needs is that #superkey & everything becomes available to the onlooker. Big business is a harsh reality. Big business cannot rely on the goodwill of its opponents. It just gets screwed.
So what is going on? We know that @PeterDutton_MP knows what he's doing. It is part of his superplan, his super department, his ability to pry into all aspects of everyone's #privacy.
But does anyone else?
Has @AustralianLabor completely lost the plot?
