This story is an important example of why the antisemitism in the Labour Party is institutional, isn't just about Jeremy Corbyn, and refuses to go away (Thread) /1 thejc.com/news/uk-news/m…
The Labour Representation Committee is one of those small factions of the far left that used to be irrelevant but now runs the Labour Party. John McDonnell is its President and Matt Wrack of the Fire Brigades Union is its Chair /2
The LRC's statement for their 2019 conference says allegations of antisemitism in Labour are part of an "onslaught of propaganda" by the "ruling class" because Corbyn opposes austerity and "imperialist war" /3
There's a bit of throat-clearing about some 'marginal' antisemitism, then they get onto the real business: this is about "criticism of Israel" which is their euphemism for demonising Israel as "a colonial settler state" and "an intrinsically racist endeavour" /4
"Waving Palestinian flags" at Labour Party conference, was, for the LRC, a way to politically oppose "false allegations [that] are intended to weaponise the accusations of antisemitism" /5
Do you see what they just did? All the Rothschild conspiracies, ISIS/Mossad nonsense, Holocaust abuse and denial, dual loyalty allegations fired at Jewish MPs that have become commonplace in Labour Party circles are erased so this just becomes about "criticism of Israel" /6
Meanwhile, irony of ironies, the LRC make supporting Palestine and opposing antisemitism politically opposite to each other. I think you can support Palestinian rights *and* oppose antisemitism. The LRC appear to think otherwise /7
And where is John McDonnell in all of this? According to Labour "John has no day to day involvement in the operation of the LRC and is not responsible for its website or for posts on social media by its supporters." Except this isn't true /8
As I wrote in my book, last year McDonnell intervened to have an antisemitic article removed from the LRC website. His comrades didn't see the problem but he insisted so they took it down. Good for him - but what is he going to do about this one? /9
There is no point giving heartfelt interviews about antisemitism when your own faction perpetuates the lie that this is all a smear by the ruling class to stop people criticising Israel. This denial of the problem is a feature of Labour's institutional antisemitism. Fix it. /End
