Ok, @Penalosa_G presentation is amazing and it’s just getting started....
Underground path in toronto sucks the life out of the city; segregation not integration
Bad weather? Need better #infrastructure ; focus on the better 200 days, not the 20 bad ones; separated bike lanes! Safe, bike in winter, keeps people safe;
How do we want to live? How do we want the #betterbyward to become?
(The trolling of JW on bike #infrastructure right now is right on....)
Democracy human rights and design are linked. 35% of public space is streets; 50% of the Byward market is street
Imagine, dream, and aspire and think of the benefit of great public space; places for families, sit, have coffee and read a book
Think the #highline, the #chicagobean and use public spaces; brings democratic equity to space
Sleep at home, but live at home. End thinking of cars cars cars
In the last generation, most of our cities are mediocre at best (cc @BrentToderian @alexbozikovic for thread)
Keep an open mind.
8 messages; not about $, it’s about vision; change is hard, the cave people show up!
If we improve the quality of life for our most impoverished people, everyone benefits
Open streets to people, close them to cars
Space for physical activity; #bogota has 171 (?)on of public car free streets.
Social integration happens in public space; mixing of classes; good example is Sunday bikedays.
Create links between streets; promote open streets; extend Sunday bike days into the Byward market
Very low hanging fruit
Create an @880CitiesOrg add #ottcity to network of international cities with urban parks around the world
Create successful cities, healthy communities, happier people; what if everything in the #betterbyward was for 8-80 year olds? Not just for 30 year olds
Make everything walkable; walk to transit, walk to shop, walk and play
Make the walking safe; 741 people killed by cars daily; these aren’t accidents; does #ottcity have a #visionzero or #zerovision ?
When we don’t bother with sidewalks, we tell the walkers they are second class citizens; they don’t matter; (ditto when we don’t plow them, ahem @MoggyBee )
How wide? 2m for walking, 4m we dance, 8m we have a party
Lower speed limits;
If #Seattle can do it, why can’t we? #politicalwill
More older adults are killed walking; we need crosswalks, and islands at every intersection.
We need to rethink; driverless cars aren’t the solution; growth of the city has to happen in our core cities
“OTTAWA is good, but not great” because we lack ambition; (trolling Watson here...)
Benchmark ourselves against the best cities in the world; improve cycling; no shadows;
We need to design our bike lanes for the 8-80 @VisionZeroCA
Lanes have to be connected; connectivity is essential; add bollards, #paint is not #infrastructure
dignify the the #transit system, give ppl good bus stops, dignify their use; of decision makers used transit it might be different
Dedicated lanes for buses; separated bike lanes; lockers for you stuff; public washrooms; people live in the area; car free areas in front of schools;
It’s about changing the mindset; make it safe; the quality of the #infrastructure represents what and who we value most
Management and maintenance are not synonymous
Management is having citizen engagement; good for with parks; you need a lot of police when they’re empty of people
Small or large parks? Both: neighborhood parks serve all needs; need all sizes; network of all them
Public art; integrated #woonerfs and trees; priority to mobility
Integrate laneways into public space (ahem @hcma @MarkBusse @darrylcondon )
Be open 24h thurs-sun; and early-late rest of week: dignify the public space; make vibrant public spaces; high density isn’t towers (troll Watson and 65st at Albert cc @cmckenney for opposing 👍)
Do ppl come to #ottcity bc of the quality of life? Does the #betterbyward make people want to live here? No, but how do we aspire to change?
Can a #betterbyward lead a conversation on better health, urban farming and food? @OttawaMarkets drives health outcomes
Make this critical to life in #ottcity
Addresses loneliness by creating social #infrastructure, give ppl something to do, public space for ppl, equity and #communitywellbeing
Imagine a place to play in a #betterbyward; have fun, give kids a place to play
Creates future city builders
