Closing out #BlackHistoryMonth, we are honoring 3 of our amazing members today!
1. Congresswoman @EleanorNorton is the second highest-ranking @OfficialCBC member on our committee. Also, she earned her ivy league law degree and a master's degree from Yale University.
2.Congressman @LacyClayMO1 is currently serving his 10th term & was first elected to Congress in 2000 after serving 17-years in both chambers of the Missouri State legislature. Did you know his father,the Hon.Bill Clay was a founding member of the @OfficialCBC. #BlackHistoryMonth
3. @RepRobinKelly was the first African-American woman to serve as COS to an elected Illinois constitutional statewide officeholder. She is also the author of the FIRST ever Congressional report on gun violence in America. #BlackHistoryMonth

Let's start with the the woman who blazed the trail for black women in wrestling. In 1951, at age 16, Ethel Johnson became the first African-American female wrestler.
Ethel and her sisters, Babs Wingo and Marva Scott, were selling out shows in Baltimore and Kansas City, and at one point Marva Scott was ranked #3 in the world by Ring Magazine, the same issue where Moolah ranked #14. #BlackHistoryMonth

@realDonaldTrump You have attacked the black community nonstop. You called black NFL players standing up for themselves “sons of bitches.” You routinely attack the intelligence of highly successful black people. These words couldn’t ring more hollow.
@realDonaldTrump Trump called African countries “shitholes,” while wanting more immigrants from Norway. He refused to rent to black tenants. He stood up for Charlottesville white supremacists. He called for the death penalty for the Central Park Five, refused to apologize when they were cleared.
@realDonaldTrump This list could keep going forever. The Donald should probably sit out #BlackHistoryMonth instead of offering up lip service that clearly isn’t genuine.

I've a piece in tomorrow's @IrishCathNews about the Vigano Allegations, but to whet your appetite, I've written a big Q&A thread on them. I'm afraid this could take some time...
1. What’s this Vigano story? While Pope Francis was in Ireland, Carlo Maria Vigano, a former papal nuncio to the US, had several media outlets publish a ‘testimony’ attacking the Pope and a host of prelates and calling for the Pope's resignation.
2. When would the Pope have seen this testimony? At some point on Sunday 26 August. He’d have heard of it when he woke that morning and was questioned about it by journalists on the flight back to Rome.

Drapetomania: “Runaway Slave Syndrome”
American physician Dr. Samuel Cartwright observed black slaves who fled from captivity and saw an illness. He named the illness, “Drapetomania or the disease causing Negroes to flee” #BlackHistoryMonth
To cure Drapetomania, recommended “whipping the devil out of them” until slaves became submissive again. “Submissive” was the primary state to which he felt they belonged. Another remedy suggested by Cartwright was having the big toe from both feet severed. #BlackHistoryMonth

Today marks the start of #BlackHistoryMonth, and we will be honoring historic black LGBTQ activists, writers, politicians, entertainers and thinkers all month long.
1/ Audre Lorde was a black lesbian feminist, scholar and activist whose work powerfully speaks to the intersections of racism, sexism, and homophobia.

In the words of Lorde, "I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own."
2/ Lorde's legacy lives on in The Audre Lorde Project -- an LGBTQ Community Organizing Center based out of NYC that serves the most vulnerable members of the queer community with a commitment to community wellness and racial and economic justice. @audrelorde
