My sense is that belief in (singular) God is a restatement of "everything can be traced back to [hard-to-define] Source", and that we are all connected via Source. As such, it allows for a "universe of discourse" that brings together physics and metaphysics, science and theology.
A "loving God" is a restatement that our universe likes to construct more connectedness, which leads us to life (and possibly in forms we have yet to encounter); we're not just here for the fun of entropic decay. There are different perspectives and languages for the same thing.
If we look back in history, a "belief in God" may have as its implicit meaning (and I'm right out on a limb here with no evidence) of "belief in [social] Good" — i.e. do you accept interconnectedness of all things, and therefore our common living nature and necessity for empathy.
The kinds of arguments that people like Richard Dawkins push strike me as misconstructions and straw men. There are plenty of deluded and unwise scholars of science and theology, but picking all the "rotten cherries" off the tree doesn't condemn the edibility of fruit in general.
There has been a longstanding search for a Grand Unified Theory inside of physical science—but maybe that's pissing on the wrong lamppost. The nature of emergence places limits on the utility of the philosophical tools of science. Eventually you have to look elsewhere to advance.
Personally, I'm ignostic. I haven't read up on the latest thinking on consciousness, and all I know about theology is that it contains hermeneutics as natural flavouring. Atheists are making strong claims that reject the very idea of synthesis, which seems an intellectual folly.
There are now so many things that I have come to understand I had either completely wrong or misframed, that it's OK to let go of more of the "premature certainty" I had on many subjects. Chill out and enjoy the ride on Gaia, the premier Galactic destination for chocolate lovers.
