today, on #InternationalWomensDay, my conlaw class and i discussed a woman's right to choose. these stats are important, mortifying, frustrating, shameful, and demand engagement, activism, and a new Democratic majority. #Thread

between 2010 and 2015, states enacted 290 new laws imposing restrictions on abortions. in 2016 alone, 19 states adopted 64 new laws. #electionsmatter

33 states and DC prohibit the use of state funds to help women exercise a constitutional right, except in certain narrow circumstances. this unfairly targets poor women and women of color.

11 states restrict coverage of abortion in private insurance.

18 states force women to get counseling before getting an abortion. 5 require info on a supposed link between abortion & breast cancer. 13 req the woman be told the fetus will feel pain during the procedure. 8 req info on negative long term health consequences for women.

27 states have waiting periods. 14 of these states essentially require women to make 2 separate trips to a clinic to get the procedure done, and when your nearest clinic is 200 miles away and you only get paid when you work, this makes it impossible for poor women.

fake "crisis centers" that don't provide any services at all are not even required to tell women where they can get real help, thanks to #scotus in NIFLA v. Becerra

states are pushing the envelope with 20 week abortion bans, hoping #scotus's new conservative majority will gut Roe and Casey even more.

But even if the Court lets a const right to choice stand, we erect so many barriers to women, particularly poor women and women of color, to access their constitutional rights, that at some point, the right to choose is only going to be a right to a select few.

1 in 6 fed judges have been appointed by Trump. progressives need to come together and fight back and make the courts as much of core of our work as the right has. on #InternationalWomensDay, we need to do better!
