NEW PIECE: "If you apply for disability insurance, you might want to stay off Instagram." - On the GOP plan to teach A.I. to spy on disabled Americans as a way to demonize the "undeserving poor" and cut anti-poverty programs. NEW @Medium -

@Medium 2) You should follow and support (I do!): @mattbc, @EbThen, @annieelainey. Great disability justice leaders. All cited in the piece.
3) Thanks to the anonymous people who talked to me about their fears about this new program.
4) The NYT broke this story. What's been less noticed is the combination of the expand social media snooping with AFES, a machine-learning anti-fraud system that is going to gobble up your data on a massive scale and run programs to see if you're lying about disability.
5) I talked to @schneierblog about that. Of course, the algorithms they plug in will be exercises in bias about the very nature of disability. And other kinds of bias too. But woosh will it scale up that bias.
6) As @EbThen in particular says: Social media is /the space/ where disabled folks have taken in order to refute stereotyped about disability. Now SSA wants to use that against them.
7) As @mattbc says: The deck is already so stacked against SSDI applicants. This will make it a disaster if any adjudicator can browse your social media in order to keep you out of the program.
8) And it's really all about attacking Social Security /generally/ via misconceptions about SSDI and levels of fraud.
9 et fin) This is the kind of "common sense anti-fraud" measure that could easily slip through. Call your representatives. Stop the expansion of the surveillance state. @Medium
