The Bible saying is true, "He that is faithful in little will be faithful in much." When a small task is delegated to you and it is not done well, don't be surprised if greater responsibility is withheld from you.
Delegation means the one who delegated bears the brunt of your mistake. So, you risk their success and not just yours. That's why after a few trials, bosses move on to look for someone else or they do the task themselves.
The reward for good work is more work. You'll notice that in your office, there are some people who keep getting more assignments. Your boss keeps selecting them for responsibility.
Usually, such people have a few things in common. They exude maturity & seriousness when it's time to work. And, they work longer hours in order to complete tasks.
They also ensure peace of mind. You can give them a task and go to sleep knowing it will be done. You don't worry they'll burn the business down and upset clients in your absence.
When a responsible boss finds a responsible staff, they immediately begin grooming such a person for leadership.
