US "strongly supports a peaceful and democratic" #Sudan, calls for restraint and civilian participation in the government following military junta replacing unpopular President Bashir, says @StateDeputySPOX.

A big focus for the United States right now is the safety and welfare of its embassy team as well citizens, adds @StateDeputySPOX

Sudanese should have a civilian government sooner than the two years that the military says will be the timeline, says @StateDeputySPOX.

"We are suspending upcoming Phase 2 meetings" with #Sudan but open to engagement that support meaningful progress that would address the Sudanese people's legitimate demands, says @StateDeputySPOX.

"The Sudanese people should determine who leads them" is the US position and that should happen sooner than two years from now, says @StateDeputySPOX, responding to reporters' questions.

"We believe the victims of Darfur deserve justice and that accountability is essential for achieving a stable and last peace" there, adds @StateDeputySPOX. "I'm not going to get into specifics on how accountability should be held."

"It's a historic moment for the people of Sudan," replies @StateDeputySPOX when asked if there was a coup there. "At this time we don't have a final assessment on that situation."

US citizens in #Sudan should "shelter in place," avoid crowds and keep a low profile, according to @StateDeputySPOX.

"The situation is fluid and we'll be watching it closely," adds @StateDeputySPOX of #Sudan.
