TUTORIAL TIME! Follow this thread to see my process and maybe pick up some tips and tricks. What do I know?
Anyway, here's a small mix between a hexmap, a more traditional dungeon map and some creatures and stuff. Lets go!
Let's start out with a sketch. I use a blue pencil since that's easy to remove if scanned, but you can go with whatever you like (as long as it's eraseable). Try to keep the pressure pretty light to prevent it from being hard to remove later. Isometric paper is super helpful btw!
Fill in the lines with a nice, fat pen. Take it easy and be patient. Don't worry too much though, since we'll be going over most of these suckers again. I like it when some things poke out of the hexes. It makes it look a little more alive I think.
Remember when I said we'll be going over the lines again? Well guess what, that's what we're doing now. Fat lines on the outsides of things, thinner ones on the insides. Be patient! (Personal preference: squiggly lines feel less rigid and more organic than 100% straight ones)
Now let's add some thinner details. I add stuff in emptier areas, but try not to overdo it as a way to hide how bad you are at drawing things (I do this all the time, so sue me)
Also see those dots and lines around the map? Let's talk about crosshatching etc...
Crosshatching - Check out @DysonLogos tutorials on map making. They are awesome and will help you get started with really nice looking crosshatchings. That's how I got started with maps, which means I owe Dyson quite a lot. Play around with your own techniques! Experiment!
WASN'T SPENDING HOURS AND HOURS ON DRAWING SMALL DOTS FUN AND REWARDING? No?!
Remember - take breaks! Start small and easy. Don't go overboard on the first thing you draw. Take care of your your wrists! Seriously!
Draw the rest of the fucking owl. Develop your own style. Make mistakes. Get angry. Give up drawing. Feel bad about every moment not spent drawing. Use reference pictures. Keep at it. Ask for feedback. Draw with friends and help each other out. Keep it fun!
Now, I've been drawing and doodling most of my life, and I'm not saying "follow these steps and get good" but you get the idea. I'm not saying that I'm an amazing artist by any stretch of the mind and that this is how to draw everything, only that this is what works for me. Okbye
