Just launched, the @OpticalSociety & @SPIEtweets Professional Conduct @WomenInResIE joint report on Assessing and Addressing The Level of Harassment at Scientific Meetings #STEM #womeninstem #womeninoptics #scicomm #optics #photonics spie.org/about-spie/adv…
Some interesting stats, which are not very surprising "over 9% of respondents say they experienced harassment at meetings or events hosted by the scientific societies. Of those who experienced harassment, 63% were women." #womeninstem #womeninoptics #LGBTinSTEM #optics #photonics
I've just had a quick read but the thing that struck me most, more than the stats was the personal stories in Appendix I - sadly these are stories I've heard from friends & colleagues who have attended scientific meetings & conferences. #womeninSTEM #womeninoptics #LGBTinSTEM
Thank you to @OpticalSociety & @SPIEtweets for undertaking this survey. It can't have been easy. Thank you for taking harassement (in all it's forms, for everyone) seriously. Far too many meetings / conferences just ignore the problem. Thank you for taking a stand.
Another thing that struck me, which is also represented in the data collected, is that I have no idea how to report harassment. I too would be wary to report anything, esp if it's someone significantly more senior who may have well established connections with the organisers
I have seen this and nothing gives me more rage than when a woman asks a question at a conference and the male chair answers "What the lady is actually trying to say is..." I have heard this numerous times and it's so insulting. #womeninstem #womeninoptics #EverydaySexism
