Last week I tweeted a thread about #utulsa’s drastic “True Commitment” plan, unveiled on 4/11. This led to an outpouring of support from those in #highered who have seen similar debacles unfold at their own institutions. Time for a thread about the campus response so far. 1/12
National and local news have included mix of support & opposition to the plan. I’ll focus here on circumstances actually happening on campus rather than PR battle unfolding in the media. Obviously, admin has resources & consultants to help them gain upper hand in PR battle. 2/12
FRI. 4/12: College of Law faculty pass voice vote resolution to delay implementation of #TUreorganization pending faculty task force. Resolution had roughly 12-15 yays, just one nay, and a couple abstentions. Lone dissenting vote was from member of the provost’s committee. 3/12
TUES. 4/16: In the middle of the night (really, early Wednesday), Student Association passes vote of no confidence in #TUreorganization. 4/12
WED. 4/17: College of Arts & Sciences faculty vote to oppose #TUreorganization by a margin of 89-4. Vote was held by secret ballot. A&S Dean and at least one member of provost’s committee attended and voted. Respect to them for their participation. 5/12
THURS. 4/18: Faculty Senate elects new president, breaking precedent by refusing to elevate existing VP to pres. (Usually, VP becomes next year’s pres.) One reason: VP was on provost’s committee. Now, incoming pres and VP are likely to provide independent voice for faculty. 6/12
University pres and provost attended fac senate meeting. Onlookers described them as being visibly upset. At one point the president had what was described as an “outburst” or “tantrum” against at least one faculty member. The president later apologized for this behavior. 7/12
FRI. 4/19: Students hold mock funeral to mourn lost programs. Event coincides with visit by incoming students. Admin provides student tour guides with talking points and tells them to put “positive spin” on changes. Some guides allowed to excuse themselves from taking part. 8/12
SAT. 4/20: Concerned alum launches website to compile critical information about the plan, the process, the outcome, and the outcry. It will be a good source of info for interested parties. Here it is: tuplan.org 9/12
There are plenty of other highlights, rumors, dustups, and private exchanges that I will not share here. The campus is on edge as students and faculty face uncertain future. 10/12
Meanwhile, admin is in full-on damage control. All this as students prep for final exams. Many have expressed anger about inconsiderate timing of rollout—just before exams, it’s too late to transfer, etc.—which has caused anxiety and affected academic performance for some. 11/12
I love being part of #utulsa’s vibrant community. We know some aspect of these trends are happening at many colleges; admin decisions are not isolated. TU community is serving as model for how to respond to the more insidious forces threatening #highered. Stay tuned, folks. 12/12
