#Spanish election: socialists win amid far-right gains for Vox party theguardian.com/world/2019/apr…
Turnout was 75.8% – well up on the 66.5% two years ago. Pedro Sánchez of the Socialist Workers’ party (PSOE) hailed the result and the high turnout as proof of #Spain’s desire to move forward and reject the reactionary policies of some of his rightwing opponents.
“The PSOE’s triumph – it picked up 38 more seats than at the last general election in June 2016 – came amid the continuing fracture of the Spanish right. The far-right Vox performed slightly below expectations” #Spain
Vox, which until last year was a fringe party without the support to win seats in congress. It has managed to become the first far-right grouping to win more than a single seat in congress since #Spain returned to democracy after the death of General Franco in 1975.
#Spain's general election: What just happened? bbc.com/news/world-eur…
“The idea of a far-right party in #Spain's parliament - possibly even in government - for the first time since the death of fascist military dictator Francisco Franco, sickened large sections of Spanish society.”
“You hear a number of voters saying it is not so much that they voted for the Socialists, but rather that they voted against Vox.” #Spain ‪In the end, Vox managed to win 24 parliamentary seats, roughly what polls had predicted, but the result fell far short of the political earthquake they had hoped for.‬<br />

‪Arguably their most dramatic achievement was to splinter Spain's political right, leaving the normally powerful centre-right, the now rather ironically-named Popular Party, humiliated.‬
