Am at the assessment centre with bf who is claiming disability benefit (as he is legitimately impaired with multiple painful long-term conditions). I personally have never had any interaction with the welfare state. A profound learning experience.
I have found some friends in the past judging me for loving someone who is in his position (unemployed and unwell). I don’t recall ever committing to only date Ivy Leaguers with executive jobs and a paid-off mortgage! It’s facing the rough together that fuels committed intimacy.
Today’s assessment took about 90 minutes and was professional and in both process design and execution. It was quite saddening to face up to just how much suffering and struggle my beau endures. He tries to shield me from it normally to save me distress.
The assessor could tell this was a genuine situation and claim. Whilst holding her professional boundary, she was calming, caring and compassionate. It’s a thankless job conducted in a stark windowless room. Not a pleasant environment for either party.
At the end I thanked her for looking after us. When this comes from a heartfelt place it is a magical phrase. Everybody likes appreciation and gratitude for meaningful work. It’s no use complaining about the system; seize the opportunity to engage with it as humanly as possible.
