What is extraordinary is that he has got here, now the die is cast it seems.
I will start a thread to follow some developments. It is almost 8am in Caracas. This day, I suppose, will be a defining day. But then we saw that before when he was declared President on Jan. 23; and the border standoff and burning aid on Feb. 23.
What is interesting is that Russia and Turkey have sided strongly with the Maduro government, so it's hard to see how they hadn't advised the gov. But then again Turkey lost out in Sudan recently.
Western powers had clearly sent a message to the Maduro gov that they must not interfere with Guaido's gov, and that resulted in the surprising fact he was not detained. But today's events would appear to take things to a much different level.
I'm following @Ozkok_ and @ConflictsW among others as Venezuela crises develops ; so far this banana-crate used for ammo strikes me.
Once you have two different armed structures in a country and they oppose one another and they are intermixed in many areas, it would seem that real conflict will result unless there is some quick action by one
The video of Carlota base is taken from this area
This was earlier this morning by @leopoldolopez
More details and comments on #Venezuela as things develop
What sounds like gunfire and people running has happened now here in #Caracas at Carlota base airport area I show it on the map #breakingnews #happeningnow
@bellingcat I’ve been tracking some locations from the videos that were put up above
You can cross reference for the video themselves at @ConflictsW who has been putting them up; in just trying to locate the places from screengrabs to add to information
The shocking moment that journalists and troops who seem to be pro-Guaido came under gunfire on a bridge near Carlota base on @NoticiasCaracol #BREAKING see their full feed report
@NoticiasCaracol More details to follow,
I noticed that just a day ago there were calls for rallies on May on both sides; also Maduro withdrew from the OAS and rumors of minimum wage being increased, etc...tense time
@NoticiasCaracol The narrative of pro-Maduro outlets is that the rest of the country is calm, nothing to see here. Jorge Arreaza told @NoticiasCaracol that was the case #happeningnow
@NoticiasCaracol UPDATE: @SecPompeo writes: "Today interim President Juan Guaido announced start of Operación Libertad. The U.S. Government fully supports the Venezuelan people in their quest for freedom and democracy. Democracy cannot be defeated."
@NoticiasCaracol @SecPompeo Two thoughts: The Maduro regime has the support of Russia and Turkey, two countries that know about coups, one stopped one and one has a leader who saw the chaos of the 1990s. That works in Maduro's favor because the western countries who like Guaido aren't really experts at this
@NoticiasCaracol @SecPompeo Second thought: If the pro-Guaido troops have the Carlota airbase and Guaido is recognized by some countries as leader, in theory he can fly in aid, other things, or fly out if things go badly. But if that's the strategy, let's see, usually one must move quickly in this situation
