I’m not there on the hill. I’m not privy to the sorts of conversation Pelosi and others are having with their GOP counterparts, but it’s hard for me to see any reason to believe the GOP will stop short of anything to remain in power when their electoral future is so bleak.

They’ve gerrymandered about as much as they can, suppressed votes as much as possible (with more tricks up the sleeve, no doubt), and created a completely obsequious media ecosystem in which they’ve encased their reality-challenged base.

The GOP has zero incentive or ability to shift course at this point. They are all in on protecting the Trump syndicate and the economic interests that prefer the big man’s largesse to some quaint silliness about constitutional norms and traditions.

The GOP is playing cynical constitutional hardball. Norms are important and should be honored and protected, but when one side has decided that those norms don’t apply to them, what is one to do?

Break the norms to compete and, well, you’ve helped break the norms and that’s bad. Don’t break the norms and you get played by the norm destroyers, who will just continue to destroy the norms.

Is there a way to temporarily play constitutional hardball in order to win with the hopes of restoring some of those norms once voters have (hopefully) disciplined a party than ran off the constitutional rails?
