Had a good conversation this afternoon with @crockwave. Bottom line: as self-sovereign citizens we all need to take defense of our virtual identities as our physical ones. That means being "appropriately armed" for the very real cyberwar we are involved in.
Corrupt platforms like Medium, Facebook and Twitter are engaging in targeted "digital assassination". Our virtual identities are inseparable from our physical ones; you are relating to an avatar right now called "@martingeddes" that has some properties of the underlying human.
In my professional work, I have learned that we need to guard against "ruin risk" (even at long odds), and lean to manage the "hazard space" that we face. In the virtual we are weakly defended compared to the physical, and our response needs to recognise this.
It is not an exaggeration to describe platforms like Twitter as "enemy territory" since they are actively involved in supporting traitorous acts and covering up for criminal wrongdoing of their political sponsors. For now we insist on occupying this territory to tie up resources.
I now regard being deplatformed as a gift from @Medium. They have shown how the "progressive" party's adherents have NO HONOUR and are HYPOCRITES on free speech. We have to take self-defence seriously, and that means having a plan to protect our virtual identities from assault.
Whilst I have high hopes that the "white hats" have a plan that leaves us all safe, hope is not a valid risk management strategy. The worst case is that whole platforms shut down with no notice as the scale of their criminality is exposed. That puts us all in a "cold start" mode.
Then there are lesser risks of groups or individuals being censored and silenced. This is hardly a hypothetical concern at the point. It means having appropriate directories and persistent identities (think trip code from 8chan) to "reboot" our online lives when under attack.
If you live somewhere with hurricanes, earthquakes, ice storms, floods and tornadoes (and I can think of such a country…) then you need to have an emergency survival kit. Where's our virtual one? What broadcast or side channel networks do we need? What else to conserve freedom?
None of this is meant to be alarmist. It is about basic personal responsibility. If you want a Republic, it can only last to the extent that citizens take their duties to be vigilant and defend themselves seriously. We have all been too lax when offered free digital goodies.
