I'm attending the #DataForGood panel organized by @SFU, moderated by @drjoyjohnson w/ Sheryl Groeneweg @ISED_CA, Richard Evans @StatCan_eng, and Bohdan Noysk @SFU

#AI #partnership #bigdata #cdnsci #scipol #cdnpoli
RE - risk assessment for data security is a daunting task ➡️ so it's important to be able to communicate what is known, what can be done. Govt needs to be forthcoming to build great relationships, to build trust.

BN - the best partnerships are built on strong relationships.
BN works in sensitive patient data, which is a fantastic resource. Researchers have been accessing this kind of data for decades because of good practise to anonymized and de-identify data.
RE - It's normal for people to fear misuse of data... The potential for malfeasance is immense. On the tech side, innovative solutions (homomorphic encryption? Blockchain?) are necessary. Knowing data is de-identified might not be enough for users to trust their data is secure
SG agrees many issues remain to make sure data is secure, in life science and beyond. Old techniques can inform current ones (e.g. Data trusts), concepts of stewardship and jurisdiction still apply. Rights and access by industry, researchers, citizens, all must be considered
... Superclusters are a great example of how we are shifting towards business led activities. Govt is strengthening these relationships, to make sure Canada is at the top of the podium (and not just 3rd place) in innovation, commercialization, and generally value for the end user
. @drjoyjohnson asks how we can train HQP and build capacity? RE says we need to be efficient and vigilant. It's great to get data, but we need talent that can compile and analyze this, through machine learning and other tools.
... Govt doesn't want to be left behind but they don't have the attracting power of big data companies like Facebook or Google. We have to be smart about talent acquisition and retention
Q - most experts in big data get there by accident. How can we make the pipeline more clear?

SG says we don't know what jobs will exist in 10 years. Disruption is happening, and it's happening quickly. We can't promote careers we can't predict, but we can create opportunities
BN enrolled his daughter in a Frozen-themed robotics competition (so cool!), and it's these kinds of early promotion of STEM programs that opens minds and builds capacity for future talent.

SG wonders how well we are tapping into the scientific diaspora for skills training
Q on data governance and smart cities / Sidewalk Labs. What is the future for urban data?

SG says there's no one answer, but govt is paying attention to these cases.

@nfaradaysmith adds that @sidewalklabs is proposing a data trust now. Data standards are also critical.
... Making sure bias is minized in data generation and data processing (e.g. AI, algorithms) needs to be a priority.

SG adds that countries that lead on data standards are well positioned to lead in data utilization and will benefit economically. Canada can do better at this
RE adds, we can't deny ourselves AI opportunities unnecessarily. We need to be in the game if we want to play. We can't be a bystander. Need to make sure we have standards, but at the same time Canada can't hesitate in its support for AI development.
. @SFU champion Marta Morgan closes with great insights, on making sure data stewardship is done responsibly, and on seizing opportunities for fruitful partnerships.
