I'd say that most historians of American conservatism would agree with @danpfeiffer here. Trumpism has exposed the illiberal aspects of the GOP and American conservatism more broadly that have been decades in the making.
@danpfeiffer Whatever pre-Trump "normal" some might want to go back to is either a) utterly decimated or b) never existed in the form that people thought it did.
@danpfeiffer The GOP base has largely belonged to Pat Buchanan since 1992, they've just been waiting for the figure to emerge who could channel all of those atavistic impulses.
@danpfeiffer Despite how much I revile Steve Bannon, this is something he picked up on about Trump. It's also something many in the GOP picked up on when they chose Palin as McCain's VP pick. They've been slouching toward Trump for a long time now.
