Today, both the NYT & Newsweek repeated claims that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons - it is irresponsible & dangerous reporting to let these claims stand unchecked. #IranDeal 1/
Both Pompeo & Bolton have muddied the water with loose rhetoric describing Iran’s nuclear program that implies Tehran has an active nuclear weapons program - despite US intelligence assessments and IAEA statements saying otherwise. 2/
Pompeo said April 22 that one of the U.S. demands of Iran is to “end your pursuit of nuclear weapons.”

Bolton said in February that Iran “continues to seek nuclear weapons.”
3/
Yet, the 2019 WorldWide Threat Assessment says:
"We continue to assess that Iran is not currently undertaking the key nuclear weapons-development activities we judge necessary to produce a nuclear device.” 4/
It also refers to “Iran’s continued implementation of the JCPOA.”

And the JCPOA prohibits certain activities related to developing nuclear weapons. It also references Iran’s NPT commitments. 5/

Even the highly-politicized and controversial 2019 Compliance Report only refers to hypothetical scenarios that would breach Iran’s NPT commitments “in the event a decision were made” to resume a nuclear weapons program. 6/

The report does not state that any such decision has been made.

Also, IAEA Director General Amano said April 3: "I don't see activities that are contrary to the Iran nuclear agreement.”

And pursuing nuclear weapons would be contrary to the JCPOA. 7/

Implying that Iran is actively pursuing nuclear weapons when intelligence says otherwise is misleading and could have dangerous consequences. We saw what happened with Iraq. Lets not make the same mistakes on Iran. 8/8
