With Gene Simmons trending, I figured I'd share my favorite #misheardlyrics story. A friend of mine in HS thought this song went "I want to rock and roll all night, and PART OF every day."
Because, you know, after rocking and rolling all night it's important to take a schvitz, a little nap, maybe eat a nice bialy, and then come back to the rocking and rolling all refreshed.
And if you find your footwear to be a bit worse for wear after all of the rocking and rolling, Gene has just the crew socks you need to freshen up that wardrobe.

Bret Stephens would have been a college student in the early 90s. His "totalitarian left" classmates would have been protesting South African apartheid, homophobia, & lack of public funding to fight AIDS. And Bret is somehow saying THOSE PEOPLE were on the wrong side of history?
The only moderately redeeming point in that Stephens piece has to do with the deeply historical nature of one's conception of "the right." It's true that in 20 years most of us will look back and wonder "why did I so firmly believe X or Y back then?"
But the conclusion he draws from that is so incredibly dumb. Yes, many white people in the early 90s thought Clinton's Sister Souljah moment was great. Now, looking back, most white people have now reconsidered that moment and are appalled that Clinton did that. Not Bret.

The explicitly anti-racist politics of Sesame Street (and also the Electric Company) have a lot to do with why conservatives turned against PBS in the 1970s and 1980s.
Can't find the citation now, but I remember reading that in the 1st years of the show Sesame Street would test market all of their segments w/ kids from a predominantly African-American public housing unit in NYC. If something didn't resonate with that audience, they scrapped it.
Here's a thread from last year where I talk about how Sesame Street and the Electric Company in the 1970s taught me to imagine the American working class as always multiracial and multiethnic.

I’m gonna share with you the #story of one of the worst #terror attacks that happened in #Israel. It was a #Palestinian terrorist attack that occurred in May 1974 and involved a two-day hostage-taking of 115 Israeli people which ended in the #murders of over 25 hostages.
The terrorists took over an elementary school where 105 high school students were staying as part of a 3 day trip.
A survivor recalls that every 30 minutes the #terrorists would take a group of kids and used them as human shields between them and the #IDF during Negotiations.
Many kids risked their lives trying saving the rest. One of them was Yakov Kabela (16) who jumped on one of the terrorists during the break in, he was instantly murdered. The students were forced to sit on the floor at gunpoint, with explosive charges between them.

Music lovers will enjoy this thread tracking one prominent example of the Middle Eastern roots of early 1960s California “surf rock.”
I think the significance of this is how it tracks an alternate line of rock’n roll’s development in the US. Typically, the origin is tracked from New Orleans jazz of Louie Armstrong thru the Delta blues of Robert Johnson to BB King and then the cross-over to Elvis.
This line of development is significant because it tracks thru Chuck Berry to eastern US rock, eg Little Richard, Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, and then via Elvis, to the UK where the Beatles, the Stones, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton caught the wave.

Was talking to a girl in her mid 20s, friend of mine, when she declared "Why would I even want children, I mean, why, what's the point?"

Not an uncommon attitude amongst many young people.
I asked her - are you glad you exist? That you can experience the beauty of the world, feel joy, love, happiness, and yes, sadness and misery too, to put it in perspective?
And do you appreciate and enjoy living in a society and civilisation that overall, enables you to live a safe, comfortable life, with many pleasures?

So! As you know, the pups and I recently flew to Kotzebue, Alaska, to enter the @Kobuk440 race. It was gonna be the longest race of my life--but if we finished, I'd be eligible to enter the Iditarod, which is my longtime dream.
When we landed in Kotzebue, a volunteer delivered the team to our host family's house (oh hey @MKubalack!) and I got them set up in the backyard. I wanted them all to be fed, hydrated, and relaxed until the start of the race. They were excited but settled right in.
Some neighbor girls--and Briar, age 11--helped me pack my sled with supplies.
