Today, @DrMcCance_Katz shares California data compared to national data on prevalence of substance use disorder and mental health issues at the 2019 CMHACY conference.
SAMHSA will focus on nation no longer just on grantees.
56.8M Americans have a mental or substance use disorder in the country.
California looks very similar to the nation.
7.7M Californians are living with a mental illness or substance use disorder.
California has lower percent of adolescent initiating #alcohol use than nation.
Among those aged 18 to 25 years, California was higher than the nation for alcohol initiation.
California is the first state to make medical #marijuana legal.
National stats for marijuana use shows stable use in adolescents but high increases in those aged 18 to 25 years.
California has already had 22.5 percent of people aged 18 to 25 years using marijuana. Consistent for past three years. California also exceeds national prevalence of marijuana use in adults.
Young women in CA have been at current national level for three years.
No increase in marijuana use disorder diagnosis. May be due to social acceptability.
#Opioids are not the only problem we have. We must pay attention to other substances in this country.
Cocaine use in California among people aged 18 to 25 years exceeds the national rate. CA adult cocaine use is also higher than the national rate.
Methamphetamine is a rising problem in this nation.
Meth use in California people aged 18 to 25 years is higher than national rate.
There is a rise in #LSD use nationally. Significant increases in young adults and adults. California LSD use in adults also has a significant increase.
Federal efforts include block grants & prevention programs, like Strategic Prevention Framework. @DrMcCance_Katz shares info on PTTC's & how they provide training & implementation assistance. She encourages conference members to take advantage of these important new resources
SAMHSA needs to do more direct talking to communities.
Agency is putting out messaging on risks via its training programs.
Serious mental illness (SMI) is increasing in young people. Not nearly enough attention being paid to this.
Young adults in California have an 8 percent rate of SMI.
43 percent of young adults with SMI in the nation are getting no care.
Major depression among youth and young adults (aged 12-17 years) is rising —increasing major depression by 66 percent over ten years.
California has a major issue with rising rates of major depression.

12 to 17 year olds have 85 percent increase in major depressive episodes (MDE)
18 to 25 year olds in CA have 90 percent increase in MDE since 2010.
Major depression can be severely impactful.
Increasing rates in CA in young men. In young women, nearly a doubling over two years.
Major consequences including #suicide. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death.

Suicide deaths equal deaths by opioids. @DrMcCance_Katz will be talking about this.
Accumulating data on risks of #marijuana.
It is not a substance for health.
Marijuana users are more likely to misuse #opioids, have major depression.
Marijuana effects are apparent in both adolescents and young adults.
Vast majority of people in nation with mental illness and substance use disorders (SUD) are not getting care and treatment.
CA treatment gap is even higher. Only 5 percent of people with SUD get care.
For children with major depression in CA, 66 percent don't get treatment.

Create positive environments in schools. We need school based screening and delivery of mental health services.
We have to address needs of children. We have to and will be doing that at SAMHSA.
SAMHSA- developed resources include training for teachers and schools.
SAMHSA is working with CMS on critical advisory for school mental health integration.
CA passed millionaire tax in 2004. Very well resourced state for mental health.

SAMHSA provides $476M a year. Also get $254M for Substance Abuse Block Grant and Mental Health Block Grant is $95M. Almost one billion dollars.

Regardless of etiology of depression, the problem is right now. The data are clear about mental health needs for children.
