Let's take nothing away from the Brexit Party's success in the European elections. But even if they'd run away with 99% of the vote, it wouldn't magically make Brexit itself successful because the vote outcome and the outcome of Brexit aren't causally linked.
In other words, voting can affect the probability of Brexit happening, but not that of Brexit being inherently something that's in the UK's interest.

Alastair Campbell plot thickens, because what he did isn't against the rules. He only talked about voting LibDem after the polls had closed, so he couldn't possibly have influenced the election (outcome unless Labour are accusing him of having a time machine stashed in his shed).
Given that, it's easier and easier to draw the conclusion that this was a pure "dead cat" strategy designed to use the "scandal" of Alastair Campbell's ousting to distract from the launch of the official enquiry into anti-semitism in Labour.

No wonder councils seem at breaking point - it's because they are. Many have already broken, slashing vital local services to the bone. This should be one of the biggest issues, constantly in the headlines. Instead, Brexit is giving this Tory fiscal butchery a free pass.
Nothing can change - if you pardon the expression - while Westminster is paralysed by Brexit. But that political paralysis will go on, and on, and on unless we call the whole mess off. Even the abrupt break of no-deal is the beginning of the Brexit story, not the end.

One of the big unanswered puzzles of Brexit is how to address the concerns of many who voted Leave, from austerity to the erosion of manufacturing, cuts to police & social security, and so on and so on. Their problems and fears are real - they've just fingered the wrong culprit.
Of course, they were aided and abetted in this by referendum-era UKIP and factions within the Tory and other parties. The EU is a very convenient scapegoat when you either don't want to offer difficult answers (UKIP) or put your hand up to being the root cause of the problems.
So there's the big scary EU bully that supposedly caused everything bad in their lives, yet which in practice has little to do with issues.

But the issues themselves are real. Sweep them under the carpet and you foment more anger, because that's the politicians being dismissive.

Right. Congrats to all those that knifed @theresa_may - she was pretty useless, and the author of her own failure to deliver #Brexit

But the reality is that it wasn't 'her' deal...it was a deal created by gravity, not strategy.

This thread by @lewis_goodall could not be more wrong (although interestingly argued). UKIP literally *always* did well in European elections and in NO OTHER ELECTIONS.

That’s happening again apparently. MEP votes in Britain are protest votes and that’s all they are.
It’s a pity we don’t take MEP voting seriously. We should. But we have historically elected swathes of UKIP and LibDems who then utterly fail to win Parliamentary seats.

Theresa May is directly and personally to blame for Tory losses. She should resign right away.
Lastly I see that @Theresa_May’s farcical deal which will appeal to absolutely no Tories ever is going to lose many of our MEPs their seats. But she is leaving anyway and a new Tory leader will junk the deal. #Brexit

There is something bizarre about holding European Elections in 🇬🇧 3 years after the referendum. Voters are being asked to cast their vote in an election without knowing what the legal and constitutional significance of that election will be. Two scenarios are imaginable: 2
Scenario A: if 🇬🇧 leaves the EU by October 31 or even before then, British MEPs will only take their seats in the European Parliament for an extremely short period of time. 3

Short answer is its all pretty fluid, but here's what I think I know after usual chats with both etc (1/thread)
May will ask for extension to June 30, per reports.

Less clear if she will also say UK prepared to 'no deal' on June 30. That might be a key omission to watch, on which more later.

So will the EU agree? /2
Not necessarily. As @adamfleming warned this AM - and later confirmed by @JunckerEU interview - EU may say a short extension is "conditional" on May passive her deal next week (presumed new vote Mon or Tues)

That would be a reason for a short extension/3

Despite her #BREXIT deal being defeated by biggest margin a government has lost a vote ever maybot seeks concessions on backstop despite being told to bog off by the EU with no realistic hope of a different answer
Corbyn meanwhile refuses to talk #BREXIT without no deal being ruled out despite knowing she can't do this whilst maybot makes no concessions either.
