Here's the story nobody seems to be telling about the Peterborough by-election: between them, the two main parties shed 27,566 votes compared to the 2017 GE! That's equivalent to 58% of all votes cast in 2017. Some votes were lost to apathy (lower turnout), rest to other parties.

In other words, neither the Tories nor Labour were able to persuade a majority of their 2017 voters to come out and vote for them again this time around. That should be the really major take-away from yesterday's debacle. Instead it's all about the Brexit Party being trounced.

Overall, Labour retained just 46% of its votes from 2017. The Tories retained just 32%. That means that 2-in-3 people who voted Tory in 2017 either stayed at home this time around, or voted for other parties.
