ATTN: There is an organized crime group actively targeting members of the #cryptocurrency industry. You MUST remove mobile phone numbers from your personal email, work email & exchange/bank account recovery processes NOW! 1/ #crypto #bitcoin
They are visiting US-based phone carrier stores with fake IDs and personal information (likely from other data breaches). 2/
They are telling the stores they lost their phones and are obtaining a new SIM for the victims / targets phone numbers. These accounts even have “extra security” enabled. 3/
Once they have the number on their device, they are resetting email account passwords, first, and then resetting exchange/bank accounts, draining funds, harvesting data for other subsequent attacks. 4/
There has been evidence of them using LinkedIn and Telegram to further their information gathering and find future targets. My advice: Lock down LinkedIn & don’t use Telegram for anything important, really. 5/
This is nearly 100% preventable if you 1) don’t have SMS based account recovery nor 2FA on your email accounts AND 2) you have 2FA (not SMS-based) on all your other accounts. 6/
Please heed this warning, share it with your friends and take action to shut these criminals down or make it much more difficult for them. 7/
One good way to test and make sure your mobile number can’t be used to reset an important password is to TRY IT.

If you can get a SMS code or link to reset your password, your provider still has your number. Contact them to get the number 100% removed from your account. 8/8
