@APTNNews About 10 years ago i took part in a convo @HaskellU with a Holocaust survivor & Holocaust Museum reps re how to understand different genocides. we imagined a joint meeting betw the Holocaust Museum & NMAI in DC. i don't think it happened, but the convos were illuminating.

@APTNNews @HaskellU i specifically remember the part of the discussion where the Native people at the meeting agreed that one cannot understand genocide in the "Americas" without understanding the simultaneous environmental decimation. Indigenous peoplehood is co-constituted with traditional lands.

@APTNNews @HaskellU an elderly woman who was a child Holocaust survivor and who, as you would suspect, edifed us with her perspectives, had a quiet moment. Then she said, "Oh. we never talk about that as an aspect of genocide." i don't know if that is true of all of the survivors of that genocide.

@APTNNews @HaskellU But our conversation to seek greater understanding together of genocides & how they happen over different timescales in the Americas, felt like important intellectual, political, & ethical work. North American settler states will resist this to the end. Don't expect differently.

@APTNNews @HaskellU Indigenous thinkers add insight to genocide convos, help society lessen its humancentricity & understand that the survival of Peoples (not simply humanity) depends upon the well-being of landscapes & their stories that helped make us. #MMIWG report is instructive on this.

@APTNNews @HaskellU #MMIWG final report is clear that First Nations, Inuit, & Métis women, girls, & 2SLGBTQQIA are targeted with genocidal violence to their human bodies & families, & also by violence targeted at their lands. Human families suffer disruption along w/ relations to nonhuman relatives.
