Sixteen years ago, I started Law Dork while a student at @OSU_Law in large part because #SCOTUS was considering Lawrence v. Texas, I was a 1L, and I wanted to write about it. So, with a push from @zipsix, I did.
Starting in 2010, after I had moved back to DC, I began reporting on the cases before #SCOTUS. I covered the end of DOMA, telling Edith Windsor's story. buzzfeednews.com/article/chrisg…
I covered the case that ended marriage bans nationwide, spending a day in Cincinnati with @JimObergefell shortly after the Supreme Court agreed to hear his case. buzzfeednews.com/article/chrisg…
I also, though, was looking into other stories years before they became the national topics, careening toward the Supreme Court, that they are today. My first big report on transgender military service was back in 2012: metroweekly.com/2012/01/the-ne…
And in April 2012, I broke the news that the EEOC had ruled that the ban on sex discrimination in Title VII protects transgender people from discrimination. metroweekly.com/2012/04/transg… ... That issue will be considered by the justices at #SCOTUS next term.
There was, obviously, much more, but the point is that I have been privileged to cover so many important legal cases addressing LGBT rights and honored to tell the stories of so many of the people behind those cases since I started blogging in law school.
I'm grateful that the NYT asked me to put together this timeline — a journey back from before I was alive through to the stories I helped tell to a look forward at what remains ahead.
