As with the NAFTA negotiations, the China trade talks gives the win to Pres Trump. Any delay means Trump wins. He is fine with leaving it in limbo. The uncertainty creates risk that risk is factored into future spending and investment decisions by companies. The longer this....

....drags out the more companies that will decide it's better to build in USA, Taiwan, Vietnam, India etc. The longer it drags out with the threat of crushing tariffs over their head the more companies will move out of China to get rid of the risk.

Trump left the current tariffs alone. Reminding everyone that more will come if talks don't work out. The two sides are so far apart, I doubt it can be worked out before the elections. Each day, week, month without a conclusion means more capital flight from China and less....

....capital too China. At the same time to get the "pause" China had to agree to buy food from USA that means even more capital flowing from China. So a "pause" is a big win for Trump/USA and a loss for Xi/China.

The agreement was structured in such a way that China was able to save face with the student question and resumption of tech sales to Hauwei but notice it says nothing about them being able to sell their product to the west.

It also appears Trump might have gotten NK out of the deal from China. We will see tonight if that is true. Trump had the power to utterly crush China's economy last night. He picked a different path that should cause something close to that if China continues to play games.

The different path will take more time, it gives China numerous chances of saving itself and will harm the USA and it's friends less from a sudden shock that tariffs would bring. So, we wait and see. As we wait, remember China is harmed daily by the delay while the USA is not.
