Lauren Cowan, a teacher from a secondary school in Haringey where 60 languages are spoken, says that stories matter. It's where we see ourselves.

Some stories are hidden. She says so many of our stories, living legacies of Empire and migration, are hidden

Lauren says the novels of Dickens, HG Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle are rich with references to a cosmopolitan, diverse Britain.

The opportunities to teach migration and Empire exist but teachers choose not because of dominant narratives.
