When you wonder why the SDNY Public Corruption Unit is handling the Epstein case, as well as the reason for the failure to prosecute in 2007, I suggest you consider what drew our attention away back then:

Mark Foley and Dennis Hastert.

Think about it.

If you had a large cache of compromising information, found yourself under investigation, and wanted to get yourself off easy (pun quasi-intended), while still maintaining your control over the rest of the people you've compromised, what do you do?
You implicate a relatively low-level player, but intimate that there were higher-ups (who you also have compromising information on) who that played a role in concealing their bad acts.

Sit back, and watch as chaos ensues and fear sets in...
Then ensure that if your little problem goes away, everybody else's problems go away too.

You escape real prosecution, and everyone else's deep, dark secrets stay secret,..
But not until AFTER they make sure to 'fix up' any laws that could be used to prosecute their crimes.

Note: this only works when the party in control of at least 2 branches has something to hide.

Something BAD.

And it undoubtedly would have gone off without a hitch, if it hadn't been for a few meddling kids back home, who understood what was being hidden, and had already been trying to let the survivors of one of the implicated know that they were not alone...
Setting off a chain of events that eventually resulted in the prosecution of one of those 'higher-ups' during a period when the opposing party is in power...
And don't get me wrong: this party that may have some who are corrupted among their ranks too...

But there is a difference between a fish with an abscess on its fat fin, and a fish rotting from its head.
So, two weeks after that indictment is revealed, what do you do?

You have your guy, one who has a gold-plated exterior covering 250 pounds of pure, festering rot, hire a few dozen extras, and glide down a gold-plated escalator, in a gold-plated lobby...
And announce his intent to take over the government, because 'he alone can fix it' for you.
But don't let him in on the secret that he isn't just doing this for a big payoff...

because you actually expect him to fix it for you.
So you and your friends do what it takes to get your tool into office...

But you done fucked up again.

Because you didn't anticipate us.
So, kiddies, you're now all under investigation by the SDNY Public Corruption unit.

And they've started bringing the charges.
And they're nowhere near done yet.

Now they have *some* of the evidence, though undoubtedly not all.
But anyone who paid a visit to that residence ( a visit on an early August morning, or, perhaps, attending a fundraiser across the street?) should expect to have their property checked for possession of any mementos they may have picked up to get out of the way
in the eventuality that your cache of compromising videos from your fêtes d'enfants are uncovered, likely strategically pointing mostly to those in the opposition or who are otherwise expendable.
And, of course, we know that you can't back that shit up to the cloud... but you can back it up to another server farm at the other end of a zippy fiber line...
And a bioinformatics facility/data mining operation is TOTALLY the perfect cover for that massive data transfer.
That's just one possibility; I haven't had any coffee yet, so I'll leave you to ponder this before expounding on the other potential vectors for tracking down the data that may not have been present on site, for whatever reason.

maybe until after I brew a quad-mocha
