Thread. The Democrats might as well decide to stand for something unapologetically, because regardless of what they say or do, the GOP will call them "dangerous un-American communists." Give the voters a real alternative and let them decide, instead of chasing an imagined center.
There are very deep wells of kindness, tolerance, generosity, and cosmopolitanism in the American electorate. Obama tapped into those effectively in 2008 which was, in part, why he won.
There are also very deep wells of resentment, cynicism, and selfishness in the American electorate. Trump tapped into those really well in 2016 and continues to draw on and even replenish those wells.
If the Dems think they can win by trying to just tell the resentful, selfish, cynics that the Dems aren't as bad as Trump says they are, then they're in big trouble. This vestigial (Bill) Clintonian third way crap is played out.
Trump said all of the "wrong" things in 2016 and he won. Meanwhile, Dems are like "but they're gonna call us socialists so we better not be too bold in our policy proposals."
