Our President speaks and thinks like an antebellum colonizationist. Before the Civil War, far more white Americans supported colonization than immediate abolition. My experience is that most white Americans find this historical fact to be both surprising and dismaying.
If you were to poll white Americans today, my guess (my hope) is that a significant majority would say they would have been an abolitionist in the 1850s. The fact, however, is that only a tiny fraction of white people were abolitionists.
I'm reminded of this odd tweet the Trump people sent out during his inauguration. They tweeted random factoids about every President, including this one about James Monroe.
This would be a good day to honor the memory of David Walker, an African-American abolitionist who in 1829 wrote a scathing indictment of white colonizationists who deemed him unworthy of being an American citizen because of the color of his skin.
And this is a good day to recall Walker's 1829 injunction to his fellow citizens who were white...your refusal to acknowledge non-whites as equals will be your downfall. It's not too late to change your ways, but it is imperative that you do so soon.
"America is as much our country as it is yours." David Walker (1829)
