#Neuralink is amazing, incredibly concerning.

Some thoughts

👇
I specialize in human-machine interaction, so I am interested in any developments that might influence how we communicate with machines (especially autonomous vehicles), computers, other humans via machines etc.

Naturally, @Neuralink is of interest & I’ve tweeted about it a lot
The livestream today/tonight was exciting, and many are saying that #Neuralink gave even more answers than they were expecting.

I agree. And I think we would agree that it raised even more questions than we were expecting😅
Can’t begin to address all of them, but I will address my biggest, most futuristic concern regarding BMIs.

The thing that I actually lose sleep over, the thing that gives me a stomachache:

Inequality
In a world where high-level brain implants exist, which allow humans to download & upload information and skills, full Matrix-style…

What happens, when the only ones able to afford such an extreme, life-enhancing technology are the wealthy elite?
Perhaps the closest parallel we can draw today, is internet access.

If you’re reading this tweet, you are already augmented in a way by means of internet access.

Imagine: only the 1% are able to access the web, and you are being kept from ~all this~
(a very real problem—an estimated 43% of the global population are still lacking internet access!)
A select few having hyper-speed access to “all the knowledge” and other BMI benefits goes far beyond any current use of the word “privilege”—this more akin to a new species.
Besides access to info, a BMI may be theoretically able to enhance your qual. of life by radically improving your physical health.

Imagine a BMI that also functions as a master controller, optimizing all of the body’s sub-systems & processes by means of signaling.

What then?
What happens when the evolution of our species is no longer natural and free?
Should BMIs be regulated in some way, to ensure their equal access?

Elon often calls for the regulation of #AI.

I wonder when we should call for the regulation of #Neuralink (or the like) 🤔
