Wednesday Ppl & as those we know R finally being able 2 head back 2 their homes in Cali. Let’s talk some safety. #Thread
We reached out 2 our trained Funeral Dir. again as any real safety info has been lacking on this disaster.
First, going back into a burned area is no different than any disaster area. I need 2 be alert & aware of your surroundings.
Anything standing trees, telephone pols even structures can & probably have been weakened by the fires. The key words R “safe radius”.
Safe Radius- if it falls, what area will it fall on. That area is high caution. In layman’s terms
Second- The ash that U R being exposed 2 is not as benign as a campfire or fireplace. It is far closer 2 incinerator ash. #Toxic
Try to B in the burn area on low wind days 2 minimize your exposure. Like wise, try 2 disturb as little ash as possible.
That fool with a leaf blower trying 2 uncover & clean the area is only putting potential carcinogens back into the air.
Now 4 some basic protection- Thick soled shoes. U do not know what is under some ash. Ash may make the ground look level & hide holes.
Good fitting Ski Goggles. On a consumer level, these R as close as U can come to 360-Eye protection.
Dust mask- a well fitting N95 rated dust mask. These can B had at any construction/ auto parts/ repair store. 2 hour rule with these.
Replace every 2 hours or when breathing starts 2 become hard. Whichever comes first.
Gloves- Nitrile Gloves with a cut proof over glove. Same safety as your shoes. U don not know what the ash is hiding or what it contains.
Any disaster area is emotional. It is up 2 u first to b safe. Stop & look @ the area U R going 2 enter B4 U do. Note the potential dangers.
A picture is not worth serious injury nor is your long term health.
