(Thread) I spent 2017 documenting protest & activism in the DC area. It was a non-stop (ongoing!) beat, and 7,000+ photos later, here's some of the most unforgettable.
1. (1/20) #DisruptJ20, several anti-Trump protests blocks from the parade route. 200+ swept up in a mass arrest (upper left), facing riot charges. Most still awaiting trial.
2. (1/20) Early that morning, hundreds of protesters peacefully blockaded checkpoints into Trump's inaugural parade.
3. (1/21) Women's March. I always stop to take crowd shots from this spot on Penn. Ave. I'd never seen it like this before.
4. (2/4) Trump kicked off with the travel ban. #NoMuslimBan protests erupted instantly. Here's a scene from one of the largest in DC, outside the White House.
5. (3/4) A Trump supporter face-to-face with a counter-protester at the March4Trump, one of the few pro-Trump marches in DC this year.
6. (3/10) Thousands join the Indigenous community in the #NativeNationsRise march, "Standing Rock's last stand."
7. (3/23) One of the first marches against the GOP health plan, stopping for a die-in outside Trump's Penn. Ave hotel.
8. (4/1) #BlackLivesMatter marchers in Anacostia call for the city gov't to empower communities against police brutality in southeast DC.
9. (4/29) #ClimateMarch on Trump's 100th day in office. I remember chants like "resistance is here to stay, welcome to your 100th day."
10. GOT to mention @werkforpeace who protested outside the homes of Trump officials with "queer dance parties."

Top L: Pence's house, 1/18
Top R: McConnell's against the AHCA, 6/26
Lower L: Ivanka's for climate justice, 4/1
Lower R: WH during the travel ban, 2/3
11. (5/9 & 6/1) Climate activists voiced their anger at Trump's decision to abandon the Paris deal.
12. (6/10) LGBT group #NoJusticeNoPride protests corporate sponsorship/pinkwashing of the annual Capital Pride by disrupting the parade route.
13. (6/21) Mahmoud Hassanen sits with his family at a vigil for his daughter, Nabra Hassanen, a Muslim teen murdered in Virginia.
14. (8/11) #Charlottesville. White supremacists marched on UVA.

I still see this photo everywhere (it made the @Reuters yearly best-of) and I often think back to standing on that hill, shocked, hearing roars of "blood and soil."
15. (8/12) #Charlottesville. That tense morning at the park boiled over into a day of violence I think will haunt America for a long time.
16. (8/13) #Charlottesville. Flowers, candles, and a picture of Heather Heyer at the intersection where she died the day before.
17. (8/14 & 8/18) This was the reaction in DC to #Charlottesville. Marches against white supremacy, and a call for a Confederate statue in Judiciary Square to be torn down.
18. (8/31) Climate activists held a vigil for Hurricane Harvey victims outside former Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson's house in NW DC.
19. (9/5) Dreamers sat-in on Pennsylvania Ave. and outside ICE after Trump's decision to end DACA.

For the rest of the year, they protested on Capitol Hill calling for permanent protection through a DREAM Act.
20. (9/30) The March for Black Women, and the March for Racial Justice. At one point, hundreds took a knee outside the Trump Hotel.
21. (11/9) Dreamers, students, and immigrant youth flooded the Hart Senate office building for a #DreamActNow.
22. (11/19) With most of the island still in the dark 3 months after #Maria, Puerto Ricans marched on Congress demanding an end to aid-restricting rules like the Jones Act.
23. (12/4 & 12/5) Over one hundred are arrested protesting the GOP tax plan in the halls of Capitol Hill, including @womensmarch leaders.
24. (12/6) Pushing for a DREAM Act before year’s end, immigrant activists (and two members of Congress) were arrested sitting-in on the Senate steps.
25/end (12/19) Handmaids usher in the Christmas spirit with “impeachment carols” for Trump outside the White House.
And that’s a wrap for 2017. Thanks so much for following - I’ll be chasing whatever twists and turns 2018 throws at us. Stay tuned! Happy New Year, world.
