i hated that line more than I can express and no adult in ATLA would have ever said that to the gang Resistance in ATLA's presented as a holistic, global struggle in which all have a stake, so maybe it's food, money, being a lookout, lying to cover, something, ANYTHING-everyone was encouraged to see acts large & small as bolstering a greater revolution they could participate in.

Imagine, if you will, a man who pulls up to an empty plaza with a small moving van. He meticulously unloads pieces of wood, rope, & metal, one by one, not seeming to be in any great rush. The police greet him yet ask nothing, & when I do, he says that he's building a guillotine. He explains to me: "After the guillotine is properly mounted, I'm going to put Black people in it & cut their heads off."

This is immediately alarming information to me. I grab the nearest passerby & try to communicate great urgency while maintaining calm. They don't understand.

No one accepts this as the real answer BECAUSE she's Black, no one believes she went in the audition & blew them away & was the person they were looking for, no one believes she was better than the other people — the only thing they see's a Black girl where a white one should be. So they say that it's insulting when a lot of chatter rises about Idris Elba being James Bond because Idris Elba deserves to be his own character, not a knockoff of a franchise, but I thought the conversation about representation is that magical "other" character isn't happening!

I once told my friend an anecdote from my Chilean roommate, who told me a Spanish man struck up a convo w/ him on the train, & after a while, asked what he earned & exclaimed: "That's more than *I* make!"

My roommate responded: "Maybe I'm smarter than you."

They didn't get it. They thought my roommate was a little pretentious, which of course they were, but stupid questions get stupid answers, & there is a very clear implication in a Spanish man saying a Chilean shouldn't make more than him — it's *for* that reason, but my roommate's got his degrees.💁🏿‍♂️

"the median voter!" is almost always "the limits of what I personally allow and deem acceptable" because have you ever thought people might prefer if newspapers told them everything they already thought was true, but that newspapers have a different obligation? Or presidents? That being a leader means taking a stand on a minority position, something you know will be challenging but is the right thing to do?

That people respect leaders with visions, who have something to say, who capture their attention, *often* even if they disagree? Anyone? Bueller?

I'm not calling Encanto a Black movie, which is the point & the problem: Encanto is a product representing the ruthless interests of the most concentrated corporate evil in the room, the eye of Sauron, the Mouse that runs the HOUSE — yet a slight deviation blinds white audiences. It is not enough that the Disney Corporation is so big nothing can feasibly compete with it.

It genuinely bothers me to think one could watch Abbott Elementary & believe it’s only searing commentary on the deplorable state of Black schools & not a celebration of the love & diversity propelling a group of teachers to keep it alive w/ every breath they have despite that. Like, if you believe it says that about Black schools, get involved!

This is where I see a lot of characterization gone awry — race, the fault line of the 20th century & apparently the 21st.

White people do not see complexity in Black characters, which is how I knew a Black woman wrote Abbott. I saw me, & that only happens from someone who knows. It's why they don't understand stories like Encanto where reconciliation is possible, because they only think we're angels or demons.

They don't get that all this commentary about the infrastructure, funding, the unprepared teachers, the inadequate management is founded in love.

Like, I am VERY pro-white teachers talking about race, if anyone had been paying attention to racial education for the last 30 years they may have heard from minority students they would appreciate the topic of race not being the sole domain of whichever nigga is closest 😂 Of course people we call teachers are supposed to be shouldering this emotional burden for their students!

Of course the teacher is the person to volunteer things that may be uncomfortable to organize thoughts around instead of students thinking this class is for our benefit.

Blows my mind news organizations uncritically accept cop press releases for cop involved shootings like, no, the killer does not get to decide the first story we hear about it!!

Great example of autistic versus neurotypical communication is guessing ages: the autistic person thinks they are being asked a sincere question they need to answer to the best of their ability, while the neurotypical person has a social script of what one *should* say instead. You are not, under any circumstances, supposed to answer it with whatever conforms to your opinion (which is what the literal question asks) — you are supposed to accurately judge the social script you are operating in to consider the emotional state of the questioner.
