A while back my uni tried (valiantly) to make Academic Integrity amusing to engage with. I appreciated the effort. We used this in class (inc. to talk about issues of plagiarism re: the song itself and how they might have been avoided). But, at some point, it got out of hand... ...and, with a shutdown looming and our last chance to record something together in the same room, it became this... 🎵🎶🎵🎶(will add lyrics to thread so you can sing along at home) 😂 #highered And some light entertainment for the #covidunis hashtag crowd.

A year ago I gave a snapshot of what it’s like to try and make space for or voice critical perspectives on the sex trade, within the academy. It’s not pleasant. But the harassment and intimidation of women working in frontline services is next level... This attack - and it’s not the first - on Project Respect in Melbourne is appalling. You can read about it here: facebook.com/story.php?stor… Image

I’ve seen this report / thesis covered in multiple places now and the coverage has been poor. What is it about the sex industry that means critical thinking gets thrown out the window? smh.com.au/lifestyle/life… Firstly, there is always *always* a set of power relations involved in purchasing sexual access to another person. We shouldn’t celebrate women purchasing sexual access to others, just as we shouldn’t celebrate men purchasing sexual access to others. It is a form of coercion.

Chocking in porn is something feminists critical of the porn industry have been raising for at least a decade. What happens when you eroticise #MVAW en masse? (and then tell everyone it’s not MVAW) This. A must read. #EndVAW #pornharms theguardian.com/society/2019/j… And, of course, there is a female pornographer saying the real problem is that choking isn’t generally shown in an appropriate BDSM context. Which is just more gaslighting. We have to be able to name men’s violence against women if we ever hope to address it, let alone end it.

A thread on what it’s like to be a female academic conducting critical research into the sex industry - or a journey through my last month at work. #MVAW #VAW #EndVAWG #EndDemand #highered #academia Invited to speak at a UN consultation relating to gender, business and human rights. Despite discussions of the Modern Slavery Act and trafficking, no-one really wanted to talk about trafficking for sexual exploitation. #humantrafficking #modernslavery

Something else I try to do every year on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is to tweet parts of Dworkin's "I Want a 24 Hour Truce During Which There Is No Rape." Read it in full here: rapereliefshelter.bc.ca/learn/resource… #MVAW #EndVAW #VAW #VAWG #16Days Dworkin, addressing male allies: "We don't have forever. Some of us don't have another week or another day to take time for you to discuss whatever it is that will enable you to go out into those streets and do something." #MVAW #EndVAW #16Days
