Great thread about some seriously crap changes @ Twitter. Personally I’m here for the text posts and links to articles, and #Twitter #X is now boosting media posts. But not from competitors, so that YT vid of your talk 👎 …This all is even worse for experts and academics here. This will mean a LOT less scientific knowledge shared on the platform.

If you are teaching about propaganda in 2023, you should not be using Chomsky as the authority on propaganda or disinformation. Plenty still are. Not only because he’s been wrong about important world events. His model (led by Ed Herman actually) also just misunderstands what propaganda is, focusing on structural and political economy issues in journalism
in a way that conflates the majority journalism with propaganda (which is a deliberate activity). At a time when investigative journalists are under attack, smearing them as mass propaganda

😮 “M'Barki ran reports on a variety of subjects - luxury yachts in Monaco, a Sudanese opposition leader, allegations of corruption in Qatar - that had all one thing in common: they were planted by an Israel-based outfit specialising in 'news for hire'.” bbc.com/news/world-eur… "The second report, broadcast in mid-December, was about a leafleting campaign in #Paris accusing a former state prosecutor in #Qatar of corruption.” This is an important illustration of how the #influenceindustry works to coordinate across legacy/online media….

READ @derspiegel "Emma Briant, one of the world's leading experts in information wars & #CambridgeAnalytica scandal, argues the public focus continues to be on Facebook, Twitter and similar media companies. But not on the real problem, on the huge industry that exists in secret." Have you seen my mapping of the Cambridge Analytica and it's parent firm's international impact? Is he honestly now suggesting the holocaust happened because or was triggered by the US entry to WW2? This is incredible. @TwitterSafety It certainly sounds like it to me.

Well this is interesting. One can only assume this may be linked to the FBI inquiries into her Chief of Staff meddling in Puerto Rico. As someone who studies Anglo-American relations, this is both a hell of a snub and an unusually blatant incursion in America’s backyard. See 👇

Wow, fascinating. “snipers will be stationed on rooftops, surveillance drones will fly overhead…10,000 uniformed police officers…thousands of plainclothes officers among the crowd…bomb-sniffing dogs have been patrolling…Private security guards will assist with crowd control.” No doubt the media will fail to mention in reporting emphasising the vast numbers in the crowds paying respects, that there are also actually thousands of plain clothes police and security personnel among them.

I was told my private communications may have been hacked & released via a Russian state media journalist. He sent only a threatening message accusing me of ‘targeting’ people & promising to damage my career - no right of reply to an article in good faith. This isn’t journalism. I am aware people are sharing an article from a Russian state-affiliated website and it is based on material that may have been criminally obtained - the material has not been authenticated and the attack is being investigated.

No Chloe it doesn’t mean that. Regularly in information warfare hacked information is misrepresented and doctored. I’ve even written about this before, many have. I’ve also already said I have not even heard of the events described. Image Not only do I have no idea about what’s in this article. I’m going to comment the veracity of any articles on what is claimed to be my personal stolen data in any article by people regularly excusing and promoting a murderous dictator.

Me watching people who research media systems talk about what ‘propaganda’ is. People need to understand propaganda isn’t media bias. These are separate, different problems. There’s maybe a relationship between them, so structural issues with the media can let propaganda sneak through. But propaganda is a wholly different thing to study… if you understand

Interesting sociological experience at a gun show. Conservative 2A person who took me said they were concerned how political & hostile it was, rather than focused on 2A/gun brands. Lots of 3%ers merch, some QAnon Saw disturbing patches proudly proclaiming the wearer ‘islamophobic’ next to traditional Nazi insignia too. Oddly racially diverse people shopping though.

I am incredibly worried by how the dominant methodological paradigm is skewing focus, determining what research is enabled on influence operations and the recommendations that come from it for policymakers. No-one is funding the kind of work that's needed. Policy decisions will be based on partial understanding of the problems and if we continue this way we will face escalating abuse of the information environment driving conflicts, climate crisis and more, we will - if we continue - reach 2024 ill-prepared and more authoritarian.

This is an incredible graph showing vividly the decline of #transparency in the UK which few have been taking seriously enough. Congrats to @JennaCorderoy on the illuminating report behind the must-read article below. Jenna and @openDemocracy -amazing work researching this. Image This is a subject I care a lot about and I also have been actively pushing back on the transparency shutdown I’ve personally repeatedly encountered from the UK Government. What I will never understand is why academics who knew nothing about Cambridge Analytica or what they did fuelled this kind of misinformation over the scandal which perpetuated the unhelpful binary about ‘snake oil’ vs ‘mind control’. Mostly it seemed to be fuelled by their having spoken to Republican politicians and political consultants who are hardly neutral actors… or studies that didn’t actually examine in an informed way what CA actually did.
