NEW POST. Them Vs. US. Elites are now dangerously out-of-touch from millions of people who surround them. Findings from a new study
mattgoodwin.org/p/them-vs-us On climate change, willingness to pay for Net Zero, individual freedom, trust in government, support for the expert class, & political loyalties, the gulf between the Elites & Masses is enormous (esp. between elite uni grads & voters). As I argued 👇

This is the first in a two-part series on what I think we’ve learned about politics in 2023 and —coming in the next few days- what I think 2024 will deliver.

Here are the first five ... 1. In aftermath of October 7th it has become clear the policy of multiculturalism is not working Image

NEW POST. Islamo-Fascism and the Woke Left. Why many Brits now fear their values, history, and identity are being attacked on two fronts at the same time.

Both are profoundly illiberal belief systems, prioritising religious or fixed-group racial, sexual, and gender identities above individual rights

NEW POST. Yes. Multiculturalism is Failing. What the pro-Hamas protests tell us about modern Britain.
mattgoodwin.org/p/yes-multicul…
When you watch British nationals on Britain’s streets —many from minority backgrounds— celebrating the rape and mass murder of Jews by a terrorist group which is proscribed by the British state then you know multiculturalism is failing.

📉 Some utterly bleak numbers for Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives this morning. First, how people plan to vote at the next election: Labour 50%, Conservative 21%. Only about 4 in 10 of the people who voted for Boris Johnson in 2019 plan to vote Conservative now ... Second, the economy, the most pressing issue facing voters. Who do they trust to manage the economy? Once you remove the undecided, 32% say Keir Starmer and Labour, only 16% say Sunak & the Conservatives. Only a minority of Tories, 42%, now back their own party on the economy.

How has public opinion of Harry and Meghan changed since their Netflix documentary? A short thread on the latest polling #HarryandMeghan In the aftermath of the documentary's release, my own polling has Harry & Meghan's "net rating" at -26

Why is Elton John leaving Twitter a story on the BBC while the Twitter Files --all of it central to the global debate over social media, power and democracy-- has barely been mentioned at all, having been buried away under a Trump story? I think we've actually entered the Twilight zone.

How to fix the NHS crisis? Steve Powis on @bbclaurak is absolutely spot on. If we want to begin dealing with the crisis we need MANY MORE medical school places here in the UK & become less dependent on importing doctors. Here are just a few statistics to underline the point ... You can see how broken the current system is by looking at the number of applications to join the UK medical register by UK, EEA (Europe) and IMG (international medical graduates) who mostly come from outside Europe

*NEW Substack*. Critical Race Theory is starting to infect Britain's schools. We need a full government review of what children are being taught
mattgoodwin.substack.com/p/critical-rac… I don't want Britain to become America, where heated battles about what children are taught in school have now become central to national politics.

I just spent a few hours at Michaela Community School. I was given a tour, had lunch with some of the students and discussed associated issues with the Social Mobility Commission. A few observations .. The school is deeply impressive. My tour guides were two students, from year 8, who were very bright, well behaved, confident & asked me lots of questions. They also told me off for talking while students were learning in one of the classrooms :-)

Very cool Wash Po project on the Midterms. A useful correction to much of the analysis. Republicans did better than Trump 2020 margins in 344 districts. Democrats did better than Biden 2020 vote in 69. Image Republicans have also made some significant gains in areas won by Biden in 2020 Image

Most Brexit voters (73%) and all voters (57%) now think immigration has increased since Brexit & most Brexit voters (78%) & all voters (56%) think it is "too high". Only 30% of all voters think it is "about right" or "too low". More in Common/PF, Nov 1-3 Most Brits support refugees & want to welcome them but most Brits, 60%, also think "UK shd limit number of ppl who can apply for asylum to UK to keep numbers low". Only 28% think there should be "no limit".

This will no doubt be an unpopular tweet but leaning into the border crisis & raising the salience of cultural issues is not a bad strategy for the Conservatives. It's certainly not pretty but it's probably going to help the party win back some of the voters it needs to win back. 1/ Global politics here is instructive. At recent elections parties that campaigned relentlessly on border crises -Hungary, Italy, Sweden & I suspect next week America- have prospered. Most people do not think like urban liberals. They want secure, controlled borders

Japanese gvt intervenes to stop Yen crashing to 32 year low. Macron uses emergency measures to ram through budget. Italian populists take control of gvt. Eurozone posts record deficit. Argentina has yet another reshuffle. Sweden installs gvt dependent on populists. Must be Brexit One irony of post-Brexit "analysis" is that those who see themselves as cosmopolitan look only at what is happening in Britain.

NEW. *The Conservative Party falls to the lowest level of support in British polling history*

Labour 53%
Conservatives 14%
Lib Dems 11%

@PeoplePolling Oct 20 I've never seen this in my lifetime. The closest was 17% during the Brexit meltdown in the spring of 2019. The party is now only holding 29% of people who voted for Boris Johnson in 2019 and 19% of Brexit voters.
