Abolitionism is rapidly gaining momentum because average pro-life voters believed that the only thing preventing states from abolishing abortion was Roe v. Wade. 1/19 The unspoken expectation of many pro-life voters was that when Roe was overturned, red states would be quick to ensure equal protection for the unborn and treat abortion as murder. 2/19

In. Christ. Jesus.

This verse is describing a miracle. Classical liberals think they can recreate this unity without Christ.

A 🧵 on tribalism, the state of nature, and political theology. 1/20 Galatians 3:28 tells us two important truths that are often missed by focusing solely on the description of a people that have transcended physical, ethnic, cultural, and class differences. 2/20

One of the challenges we had to overcome early in the effort to sound the alarm about Critical Race Theory was regular folks who recognized the problems but didn’t know how to articulate their concerns without sounding racist. 1/8 Nationalism has the same problem. Folks are concerned about globalism and haven’t quite figured out how to articulate those concerns without automatically triggering the negative response we’ve been conditioned to have by the postwar liberal consensus. 2/8

Evangelicals have made an idol of evangelism.
🧵 1/16 The whole "idol of ____" is way overplayed in gospel-centered circles. It seems like every week there's a new article on the idol of marriage or family or politics or career. They all convey the same basic idea that being enthusiastic about anything makes it an idol. 2/16

I've struggled with how to respond to the death of Tim Keller. My thoughts on him and his legacy are complicated. 1/13 I first encountered Tim Keller while working for a seeker-sensitive mega church. I had grown frustrated with the shallowness of our "relevant" preaching. Pastor Keller demonstrated that you could be seeker-sensitive without sacrificing doctrinally-rich biblical teaching. 2/13

🧵of quotes from A Failure of Nerve: Leadership in the Age of the Quick Fix by Edwin H. Friedman

This is the most loving thing you could say to trans-identifying people. Evangelicals don’t speak like this because we have a fundamentally flawed view of evangelism that casts us in the role of salespeople trying to close the deal instead of messengers delivering the truth. 1/4 The saddest thing is that evangelicals don’t even try to close the deal most of the time. We just use our flawed view of evangelism as an excuse to avoid saying or doing anything that would make us uncomfortable. 2/4

"Bad Argument 2: It’s racist not to cooperate with churches that have women pastors."

This is where I doubt the SBC's resolve on this issue. If black churches threaten to bolt because of this, I fully expect a "third-way" resolution to prevent their departure. 1/4 When you teach that "Kingdom Diversity" is an ultimate good and that lack of diversity indicates some level of racism, these arguments, however bad they may be, are going to be persuasive to a large percentage of the SBC. 2/4

For every Oscar winner telling kids not to give up on their dreams there are thousands of others who will struggle in obscurity until they die or give up and move on to live fulfilling and productive lives in the real world. Don’t take life advice from lottery winners. 1/9 I’m not saying you shouldn’t have aspirations. You should. They give you something to work toward. However, you should hold them loosely and be open to other opportunities. 2/9

Christian parents, particularly dads, need to recognize our God-given responsibility to educate our kids. This requires a biblical understanding of education. You shouldn’t make any schooling decisions without first formulating an educational philosophy rooted in scripture. 1/9 Armed with an educational philosophy, derived from scripture, that you can easily articulate, then you you’re read to evaluate different schooling options. 2/9

Who said it?

“Men cannot trust men whose primary concern is what women think, or who demonstrate little concern for what other men think. Such men will routinely falsify their preferences and betray other men and the male group in order to advance in the favour of women.” “Manliness signals trustworthiness to other men because manliness is about a man’s capacity, determination, and character as—and, most importantly, his commitment to be—a man among men. Manliness represents the traits that men desire and admire in other men.”

The evangelical Overton window has moved significantly since many of us first began warning about wokeness in the church. 1/9 It should be expected that many leaders who were previously silent or worse, parroting woke ideology will begin to speak up now that it’s within the realm of acceptable evangelical discourse to criticize it. This is a win. 2/9

I once was lost in darkest night
Yet thought I knew the way
The sin that promised joy and life
Had led me to the grave
I had no hope that You would own
A rebel to Your will
And if You had not loved me first
I would refuse You still

But as I ran my hell-bound race
Indifferent to the cost
You looked upon my helpless state
And led me to the cross
And I beheld God's love displayed
You suffered in my place
You bore the wrath reserved for me
Now all I know is grace

Two distinct projects seem to be coalescing under the term "Christian Nationalism." I believe they need to be differentiated and disentangled. A proposal 🧵 1/23 Project 1 is primarily concerned with the philosophical and theological justifications for a distinctly Christian Nation and exploring what that could look like. This is a broad project theoretically applicable to any nation. 2/23

Pastors, it's important to be vigilant against the infiltration of Marxist ideologies in our congregations. The church must be equipped with the knowledge and tools to discern and reject these false teachings. 1/4 Jim Jones, the leader of the Peoples Temple cult, was a socialist who became a pastor to recruit people to his socialist cause. This is a powerful reminder that demonic ideologies can be disguised in religious language. Vigilance and discernment are crucial. 2/4

On the nominal Christians produced by cultural Christianity:

“Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, ‘Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’”
Matthew 13:30 ESV We shouldn’t look to a hostile culture to purify the church. God will sort everything out in the end.

“All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”
John 6:37 ESV

While I was away from Twitter I read this great article by @PatrickKMiller_ over at @TGC which totally explains what has happened to @philvischer over the last few years. 😏 1/ thegospelcoalition.org/article/gain-a… For those blissfully unaware of the latest bit of TGC drama last month, Miller used me in the article (without naming me) as a cautionary tale of someone who has lost their soul trying to grow an audience. @BMcGrewvy had a nice article about it. 2/ patheos.com/blogs/youngfog…

This is one of my pet peeves. It’s the theologically conservative version of affirming someone’s sin. “Yes, you’re living in sin, the Bible is clear on that, but I snapped at my kids in frustration today. That’s just as bad. Sin is all the same in God’s eyes.” 1/5 Image All sin should grieve us and even the tiniest sin is deserving of God’s wrath. However, we minimize the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit when we act like a believer walking in the spirit sins to the same degree as the most flagrant unrepentant sinner. 2/5

“The public square is not religiously neutral. And laws are not morally neutral.”

According to Leeman’s argument Christians should seek to govern according to the moral framework of Christianity but under no circumstance should that moral framework be formalized. 1/9 Sticking with his Christian School comparison, that’d be like a school teaching a Christian worldview but refusing to acknowledge that it’s a Christian School or put any policies in place to make sure the school continues to maintain Christian teaching. 2/9
