This was quietly a big week in the U.S. House. Some developments with major implications for the future--

1) The largest group of House Republicans issued its FY24 budget, calling for Social Security cuts for regular people and tax cuts for the wealthy:
2) House Republicans advanced a new tax cut law, aka the "GOP Tax Scam 2.0."

The bill would cut taxes for corporations and the wealthy, and increase the deficit -- right after Republicans spent months threatening to wreck the economy to extract cuts.

We just passed 100 days since the beginning of the 118th Congress, and things are not going well for the Republican majority in the House.

They've struggled to pass legislation, craft a budget, or agree on priorities. And now their leaders are openly fighting with each other.🧵 You remember how it started: the extreme right of the GOP conference denied Kevin McCarthy support in vote after vote, inflicting brutal humiliation on him and plunging the House into chaos not seen in over 150 years, since before the Civil War Image

If true, the reported existence of a hidden financial relationship between a conservative donor and a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court is inexcusable and unacceptable.

Justice Thomas should resign. I have not previously called for Justice Thomas' resignation and do not do so lightly now. He has shown a clear pattern of disregarding ethics rules and hiding conflicts of interest, and is failing to meet the ethical standards to which our highest public officials should be held

House Republican leaders say they will try to defund the police in response to the criminal indictment of Donald Trump I've been warning about this before last year's midterm, as the MAGA Republican faction in the House eyed a little-known procedural mechanism which they want use to interfere with law enforcement investigations of Trump:

NEW: Bipartisan, Bicameral Delegation Introduces Legislation To Boost Hiring Of Military Spouses
beyer.house.gov/news/documents…

With @MikeKellyPA @RepJimmyPanetta @JudgeCarter @timkaine @JohnBoozman @SenatorHassan @SenatorRounds: My mother was a military spouse, I know how hard life can be for partners of active-duty servicemembers, who often have to move their families long distances.

Our bill would update the tax code to overcome hurdles to employment that disproportionately affect military spouses.

Great news for my Republican colleagues, they can stop panicking about a balloon now “Similar incursions were detected in the Trump administration”

A quick thread on Donald Trump's tax returns.🧵 This week I voted to release a @WaysMeansCmte report titled "Report on the Internal Revenue Service’s Mandatory Audit Program" which showed that former president Donald Trump was not subject to IRS’ mandatory audit of presidential tax returns for his first two years in office.

I'm on the committee (@WaysMeansCmte) that writes tax law, and I am here to tell you that this is 100% true.

Republicans are insanely dishonest about tax cuts and "the middle class;" some examples-🧵 I've been in so many hearings and markups and floor debates on tax policy. Here's a common theme: when Republicans have the pen, they call people making up to $400,000, $450,000, or even $500,000 per year "middle class."

Inflation is a rise in prices of goods and services.

In the United States we measure inflation with the consumer price index (CPI), which combines readings of key costs Americans need to cover like energy, housing, food, etc.

In July the CPI increase was 0.0%.

Zero inflation. Republicans and conservative commentators are very upset that we had zero inflation in July this because they want the American economy to fail to hurt Joe Biden.

They point to a year-over-year number showing prices up 8.5% since last July.

But CPI did not increase last month.

I just testified before the @RulesDemocrats Committee on the Inflation Reduction Act.

Today's hearing starts the process of bringing this historic climate, energy, health care, drug pricing, and tax fairness legislation to the House Floor.

My opening remarks: I got questions from Republican colleagues who had the mistaken impression that the U.S. economy is in a recession.

This wasn't what they wanted to hear, but as Chair of Congress' Joint Economic Committee @JecDems I was happy to explain to them that we are not in a recession:

I met this week with two human rights champions who are fighting for the release of political prisoners in Egypt and Bahrain. Sanaa Seif and Maryam al-Khawaja have been arrested, imprisoned, and harassed simply for advocating for their family members and other prisoners. Sanaa’s brother, a writer and fellow activist, Alaa Abdel Fattah, was unjustly imprisoned and mistreated by Egyptian authorities simply for posting on social media about inhumane conditions in Egyptian prisons.

The U.S. economy has added 6.4 million jobs in the first year of @POTUS' term (with time still to go).

The last three GOP presidents saw 1.9 million (Bush 41), 1.4 million (Bush 43), and –3 million (Trump) total jobs added during their entire presidencies
fred.stlouisfed.org/series/PAYEMS Under President Biden's leadership the U.S. economy has seen THREE TIMES times as many jobs created in a single year as were created under the past three Republican presidents *put together* across sixteen years.

One year ago today insurrectionists launched a violent assault on the home of American democracy. My statement: beyer.house.gov/news/documents… The crowd that attacked the Capitol included white supremacists and violent rightwing paramilitary groups. They constructed a gallows, and called for the assassination of the Vice President and the Speaker of the House.

I understand Governor-elect intends to appoint former coal lobbyist and Trump EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler to serve as Virginia's next Secretary of Natural Resources.

Wheeler is one of the worst people the Governor-elect could have chosen for this job. Andrew Wheeler is not who you get to show you are going to govern in a pragmatic way based on the common good and bipartisan consensus.

He's an anti-environment ideologue.

Why are they lying? We all know.

The resurgent Omicron wave of Covid is causing record numbers of new cases in our region. This is scary to many of us, especially after so much time and effort fighting the virus.

But there ARE things all of us can do right now to make ourselves and our communities safer-- I'll repeat the one you've heard about most because it is the most important: get your two doses, but if you already got them, you NEED your third dose (the booster). @edyong209 has a good, simple way to think about this: assume you are now less protected. theatlantic.com/health/archive…

This headline is 100% accurate:

"GOP Attacks Biden Over Pandemic Response While Fighting Key Tools To Curb The Virus"
cnn.com/2021/12/02/pol… Republicans are quick to blame President Biden for everything that goes wrong, even when they are making things worse on purpose. Ask them how they would improve the situation if they were in charge and their answers are pathetically bad

Republicans’ plan to shut down the government on purpose to sabotage our pandemic response is extraordinarily cynical and dangerous. The government runs out of funding in two days, but rather than work with us to prevent a shutdown, key Republicans in both chambers are instead announcing they want a shutdown to undermine vaccination efforts -- as the potential threat from omicron looms. politico.com/newsletters/pl…
