Okay! Taylor Swift has the bigger gain here. The rerecording will diminish the value of the other masters now owned by Shamrock.

Thread Apart from streaming and a few others, I can’t categorically say how much they can do with it because Taylor still retains publishing rights to her old catalog and will keep blocking whatever opportunities that might come for it (as she’s since been doing).

Here, we demystifying the difference between key music business phenomena like distribution, publishing and licensing. Again, the first step to understanding virtually everything in the music business is understanding the two music copyrights viz

Dear Upcoming Artist,

Demystifying the Difference Between Sampling & Interpolation

Let's address the much-needed difference between popular music industry phenomena - "Sampling" and "Interpolation", citing some interesting moments in African music as case study. Dear Upcoming Artists [& Publicists]

Narrative as a Tool for Marketing

Our understanding of Marketing in the Nigerian music industry is somewhat questionable as it's predominantly leans towards just Advertising, as a way of Promotion. In some past thread, I explained the 5 promotional mix viz

- Advertising
- Personal Selling
- Public Relation
- Direct Marketing
- Sales Promotion

So, Narrative as a concept falls under Public Relation and I daresay it's something we don't do well enough with.

Dear Upcoming Artiste,

As promised, courtesy of an original tweet by @thisisdamola

Here, a thread "Why Increase in Streams ≠ a Corresponding Increase in Revenue"

This is from a December 2019 study I attempted, with a couple tweaks about the present. ImageImageImage One controversy that has hovered for the longest is “How much exactly do Streaming Platforms pay artists per stream?”

Honestly, the streaming sector of the music Business is a complex one.

Too complex you keep figuring out new things as you go.

Dear Upcoming Artiste,

As promised, words from a July '19 survey I did with some of our rising independent artistes on what they'll expect from a record label, if they should sign to any.

Here's what Joeboy, Oxlade, Buju, Dunnie, Cill etc will expect from a record deal 👇 Joeboy:

“I don't exactly expect a house or car because I know I’ll pay back for all that. One thing I'd expect from a label is major PR, promotion and branding. Thankfully I have a small team of photographer, sound engineer, producer so the label wouldn’t need to do much...

Dear Upcoming Artiste,

Ran a survey some months ago among some of our rising talents. It's about what they (as indie artistes) expect from a record label [deal], if they should sign to any.

Clocked they're mostly about Creative Freedom[control].

How did I forget to share? I see not all up-and-coming Artistes have an idea of what exactly they expect from a record label. So, I'm sharing this to maybe give you a glimpse of some things you may want to consider when asked such a question.

Shall we?

Some DJs have expressed concern about Instagram yanking live-streaming of their set.

So, I thought it's probably high time they understood the [basic] legalities of live-streaming, as promised earlier in the week.

TBH, it's a complicated situation.

But start here 👇 Last week, Bobby Flowers, an LA DJ had complained about being cut 5 times in a single hour while live-streaming on IG, vowing to find a new platform to pitch his tent.

#JollofMusic101 Dear Upcoming Artiste: Basic Music Industry Terms you Should Know

3) Indie Labels:
These are self-funded labels that is NOT affiliated to any Big Three Record Label. Affiliation in this regard could be seen in the case of Mr Eazi’s Banku Music label liaising... Universal Music Group Nigeria & South Africa. After his affiliation with Wizkid’s StarBoy Records in 2016.

Indie Labels often operate solo and an example of one would be #RicHassani’s label called Riverland Records.
