1/4 Aadhaar-enabled fraud: a short thread. As this excellent @scroll_in article shows, it is easy to extract money from people’s Aadhaar-linked accounts by cloning their biometrics.
scroll.in/article/105934… 2/4 With poor people, you don’t even have to clone biometrics – you can just fool them. Here is one of many testimonies we have shared earlier on this (see link for more): Rabina Devi of Latehar, who was robbed of Rs 24,000.

1/4 Since the Indian govt is rejecting the Global Hunger Index, let’s clear the air. First, it’s not true that the index is based on opinion polls. It's based on statistical data for 4 indicators: calorie deficiency, child wasting, child stunting and child mortality. Second, the calorie deficiency indicator (misleadingly called “prevalence of undernourishment”) is certainly defective. It’s based on the FAO’s discredited “food balance sheets” and some heroic assumptions about the distribution of calories in the population.

Defend the Lancet, but can someone tell us if this is the Lancet Citizen commission on healthcare in India, or a Corporate commission on healthcare in India? To be sure, there are other academics on this commission. But it is heavy loaded in favor of corporate and corporate special interests. There is little civil society presence. And as APSC has pointed out, hardly any diversity:

Thoughts on covid-related issues. Nothing particularly new, yet worth repeating. Last year's lockdown announced by the centre in typical 'shock and awe' style made the humanitarian crisis worse than the eco & health crisis (due to the pandemic): a mass exodus of urban workers Indian media, in spite of its usual pro-elite bias, did a remarkable job of bringing the dire situation of workers who had been put out of work (and food/water/shelter) within a few hours, to those who sat ensconced in the relative comfort of their homes.

#AmbedkarJayanti Short thread on Dalit autobiographies and writings available in Hindi. Jhoothan by Om Prakash Valmiki. Small glimpse that stayed: even when he's well established, he continues to be treated badly because his name gives away his caste. His wife suggests dropping the surname to prevent the hurt associated with this. After a discussion, he decides he will keep it. His argument: people must learn to accept him fully; his work and his caste identity.

1/ The SC may have given it a green light, but #AadhaarFail TERROR continues unabated in #Jharkhand.

Exclusion, disruption, and disempowerment is what Aadhaar has brought to the lives of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups. Case studies from a recently concluded survey. 2/ A census of all PVTG households was conducted in 2 blocks, Manika & Satbarwa, in Palamu district. Despite a small sample, we encountered a plethora of #AadhaarFail issues.

(1/11) @rssharma3, Twitterati has already had a hearty meal of this but in case you haven't followed, contrary to all you Aadhaar Uncles' claims of curbing (all sorts of obscure) fraud, Aadhaar has instead enabled many kinds of fraud. #AadhaarFail (2/11) What if you find that your Aadhaar number is linked to a bank a/c without consent?

Certainly happened with Mr. Kulkarni. He was lucky it was his own account. What if yours get linked to an account used for unscrupulous activities? #AadhaarFail

Questions to NN following from @virsanghvi interview: NN(@2.30) "I wrote to the Prime minister about privacy in 2010" - would be kinda nice to see what exactly was said. Can he release that correspondence? NN@2.45: "I went back to being a good guy in the last few months" (we dispute this self-certification)..."people have realized that there are lots of things happening in the world which were far more pernicious".
