A few thoughts on the latest sectarian incident in Minya & the disparity between the words of President Sisi & actions of the security forces. The incident itself is like many others. Average citizens form a lynch mob & attack #Copts & their properties That citizens can form a lynch mob is nothing new or particular to #Egypt. Happens everywhere, and historically even in the US. The issue is one of official reaction, both during the event and in subsequent days.

A thread on statement made by #Egyptian politicians criticizing the #Copts for taking unnecessary risk in visiting their monastery. First and foremost it is a cruel attempt to blame the victims rather than hold officials responsible 1/6 These politicians would rather the #Copts abandoned their faith and ways in order not to trouble the #Egyptian government with doing its job. This is weird logic at best and is at the heart of the country's persistent underdevelopment 2/6

A thread on the @williammcraven2 op-ed. He is to be thanked & admired for his principled stand. There is a disturbing under current however. Very often civilian rule fails not because the men in uniform crave power, but because civilians are inept .. The easiest way to slip into military rule is to have consistently dastardly civilian politicians until the people tire of the parade of charlatans & ask for a man in uniform to step in. We far closer to this in American than we think ..
