There is a ‘thing’ happening in political editorials in #nzpol where suddenly we seemed to have switched from ‘the election is going to be very close’ to ‘National with Act will win’. It’s quite marked & startling given that NZ media is using the same polls to flip the narrative
I don’t want to name the media stations as it’s been mostly junior #nzpol reporters who have been covering politics over the holiday weekend while Act’s party is on but we need a bit more editorial oversight please because calling outcomes has a voter suppression effect
We also know that one of the biggest single influences on vote behaviour is thinking that everyone else is going to vote in a particular way. Act has been extremely effective in its comms but that is not the same as calling election outcomes 5 months out in a very tight race

Measles kills roughly 1 in 1,000 cases. Mostly unvaccinated kids. (Also cancer patients and pregnant people).

109 countries
(plus many more territories, regions, and states)
require childhood #vaccination.

NZ does not.

@nzherald @NZStuff Image
NZ does quite badly on childhood immunisations, even compared to many lower-income countries. Image
Australia, by comparison, has very high childhood vaccination rates.
94% of children age 5 are protected.
It's only 80% in NZ.

You need 92-94% to achieve herd immunity to measles.

They've protected their vulnerable patients. And their kids.

We, however, will face outbreaks. Image

🧵 Thread 🧵

New Zealand is facing dark times. Today the new Prime Minister @chrishipkins spoke in Parliament about the “global pandemic of inflation" in light of having to raise more debt to deal with the damage caused by extreme weather events.

Here’s what Kiwis need to know:
The “global pandemic of inflation” is the result of endless money printing by the US Govt abusing the US dollar status as global reserve currency. Trillions of new dollars are created every year on the backs of Nations which trade and hold reserves in USD. It’s simply theft.
Western countries have followed the US model of quantitive easing and endless debt accumulation by creating money out of thin air. This house of cards has been crumbling for a long time and will soon crash the world economy. Unfortunately the worst is yet to come. It’s bad.

Grant Robertson:
We will be careful, we're not going to blow things apart, but NZers expect us to help.
We have to deal what is in front of us as well as plan for the future.

Can the govt provide support via taxes or WFF?
We're working through that right now. Cyclone Gabrielle gives us all pause for thought. We need to help people.
Grant Robertson is thinking about how all this fits it.

Will NZ have a recession?
All the forecasts say so, but the cyclone recovery will be a stimulus and all those construction companies wondering about their future previously will have new opportunities. #nzqanda #nzpol

Long🧵 #nzpol #jacindaresigns #misogyny

Not sure what made anyone think this⬇️ deserved to see the light of day - but let's unpack the 'argument' it puts forward shall we.....
So, its central argument is this:

"the narrative that misogyny broke former prime minister Jacinda Ardern's mettle is wrong and unwise, and such a narrative only discourages young women from aspiring to be a leader in the future"
To show the inherent moral &/or logical flaws in an argument sometimes its useful to see where we get to if we just follow its reasoning to its 'logical' conclusion. Doing this we end up here:

[A Thread] Today is modern New Zealand's birthday; #WaitangiDay. Today commemorates the day in 1840 when the Treaty was first signed between Great Britain and many (but not all) Maori Tribal Chiefs. #auspol #nzpol 1/7
The treaty gave sovereignty to Great Britain, but guaranteed Maori land, resource rights and political representation - all of which are still in place today (despite challenges along the way). #auspol #nzpol 2/7
Culturally, NZ Maori were far closer to European culture than Australian First Nations People. They had a common(ish) language, recognised land ownership, political hierarchies, had permanent villages and farming, and formal warfare. #auspol #nzpol 3/7

Last time I was phoned by media while on holiday it was when Jacinda Ardern was put forward as leader - I recall media saying it will be disaster won’t it? I couldn’t have disagreed more- as PM Ardern gave it everything, & made it look easy-it’s not #nzpol newshub.co.nz/home/politics/…
Ardern often made leading look effortless but the effort is enormous- expect misogyny now in comments about her ‘not hacking the pace’ etc-Frankly she set the pace & we will need more leaders like her, who can cope with disasters in a changing climate/pandemic/war/economic stress
Just for the record, a bit like the time she was put forward as leader and media was sure this was a bad change for her party so close to an election- I again find myself out of step with a lot of commentary

As Ardern has learned-a change of leadership can be a circuit breaker

A reminder of the actual of the situation in Ukraine which @1NewsNZ @NewshubNZ @nzherald are not telling you:

Russia has surrounded Ukraine on 3 axis (N, E and S) with 400-500k troops.
Russia has also deployed upto 2,000 tanks in these regions
Russia has over 7,000 tanks
● Russia's MIC (Military Industrial Complex) is producing enough missiles and tanks to replace all those lost in battle so far. In real time
● Russia has a 6-1 artillary advantage. Whenever a Ukranian shell is fired that area is bombarded 6 times more until it is destroyed
● Russia has hundreds of fighter jets - at least 600-900 and more than 50 strategic bombers.
● Russia has the world's second largest nuclear submarine fleet which is currently actively deployed
● Russia has twice as many Nuclear ballistic armed warheads as the USA

1/ Here is a fundamental truth that can help us solve this youth crime wave, among other things.

"If a behaviour is rewarded you will get more of it."

Businesses should have to meet a minimum, proportional security requirement before they can open their doors. For jewellery
2/ stores this might be bullet proof glass protecting items, & a time delayed mechanism for access. The free market will come up with other ideas.

Every business should have to answer 1 question.

"How will you protect your business from theft?"

We tend to view this as a
3/ business owners problem as if its only the individual business that suffers when they're robbed.

That's wrong, our society suffers when bad behaviour is rewarded.

1/ Here's an eye watering list of @nzlabour & @jacindaardern's bad policies, over spending, & general cock ups.

Inflation is at 7.2%, the highest in three decades, so you pay more for everything .

Rents have increased by $140 per week on average – that’s $7280 a year.
2/ Weekly mortgage interest payments are $300 higher or $15,600 more per year (RBNZ & REINZ).

The government is now collecting $33 billion more in tax every year.

Aucklanders are paying a 10c per litre Regional Fuel Tax every time they fill up.

Farmers and tradies buying

The government extended the bright-line test to 10 years after explicitly promising not to – a Capital Gains Tax by stealth.

The government removed mortgage interest deductibility for landlords (a Tenant Tax) which

The speech of @jacindaardern at the United Nations.

As a New Zealander, I’m disappointed.

This speech was a lost opportunity. Parroting Pentagon talking points about the “illegal” actions of Russia in a war that the US is largely responsible for. #nzpol
Jacinda Ardern is the head of New Zealands intelligence services. One would expect that they would brief her about the US Govt activities that provoked the war in Ukraine. Maybe they failed in their duty? I’m happy to help. Here’s some history for my PM and all my fellow Kiwis:
Anyone who doesn’t understand the war in Ukraine is either consuming the propaganda media or is being misled by our politicians about what’s really going on. Let me help you understand what the mainstream media and western leaders are not telling you:

The case of a far right extremist provocatively standing for school board election in a diverse multicultural school isn’t about winning an election it’s about mainstreaming hate, creating publicity & disruption-a huge challenge for liberal democracies & tolerant societies #nzpol

Voices for Freedom have been pushing hard for weeks to get their members to run for local council and have now released their strategy. They want to have a candidate sit in every seat and are working with other groups (TFRC and more) to make sure that happens. #nzpol
But VFF’s focus is on running for seats with little to no competition. In a recent video, they took viewers through nominee pages, pointing out where there are spaces to run uncontested. #nzpol electionz.com/lge2022_resour…
There is a shortage of candidates in local body elections. This is a clear path to power for VFF and other conspiracist candidates who wish to excerpt their power over the opinions of the majority of New Zealanders #nzpol
